Reporter yeah, well, about 12 15 police first got on scene. And they just moments ago they left the scene, but before that they were focused just down the block on chain street. Were at the intersection of oak and chain. Pretty residential area. A few blocks over is where youll find more of the businesses that may have had more the exterior video cameras and things of that nature. We just spoke to one man who was leaving for work. He said he didnt hear anything and slept through the apparent gunfire. Just after midnight two people were told were shot. One was taken to the hospital. Police were focused on a car just down the block from here. Were reaching out to them as well as the Montgomery County Prosecutors Office to find out the conditions of the people who were shot. Demolition of the gutted building on Chestnut Street will not begin today as previously scheduled as announced by lni. Investigators looking for the cause of the fire can safely go inside. This week students from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in parkland, florida, will bago back to classes. The transition will happen in the midst of a Large National debate on how to end gun violence. Dray, survivors of the shooting visited new jersey this weekend. And this is movement. Absolutely. Good morning to you vai and tracy. They brought with them their incredible and very frightening stories of survival. But sunday was all about activism, aligning themselves with lawmakers who feel just as passionate as they do to change the countrys gun laws here. The students were with senator bob menendez yesterday. Some of had students talked about what it was like to be there, seeing their classmates wounded and dead and hearing gunshots. And now the students demanding something we done about gun violence, and the fight is something theyre very serious about. Stoneman douglas doesnt want to be known as the last school that got shot up. We want to be known as the last school ever that got shot up. This is nonpartisan issue, and we have to Work Together to solve it. For his part senator menendez mentioned a bill he proposed long before that shooting happened on valentines day. It calls for limiting high capacity magazines. He plans to get support from other lawmakers when he returns to capitol hill today. Theres growing outrage in the community after it was discovered three of the deputies that were near that school when the shooting happened never went inside to look for the shooter which they are trained to do. Happening today the panel charged with nominating members of the New Philadelphia board of education will hold a Public Meeting at city hall later this afternoon. The members began reviewing hundreds of applicants last month. Today the panel will submit more than two dozen names to mayor jim kenny for consideration for that board. The mayor will then appoint nine members to the new board of education. The local board will replace the state run School Reform commission. Its coming up on five minutes after 5 00, and were starting off with some thick fog in some neighborhoods. Look at cape may. A live view from the lafayette hotel. By tomorrow morning well be in the 0s. This morning, however, no sign in most neighborhoods. Pockets of fog in the Lehigh Valley, but mainly fogfree in philadelphia. 43 right now in park side, chestnut hill, westmont area, so a pretty mild february morning. But its going to be a cloudy one. Both in the low 40s, but mostly cloudy skies and bit of fog in wi wilmington and atlantic city. Its going to take some time for those clouds to move out of here. You can see theyre moving through the area right now. Some thin spots in the clouds but no sign of any wet weather for our area. Thats going to stay to the south today. So were in for a warmup, and we will see some sunshine. Look at that 3 00 temperature in philadelphia. And its really not cold this morning. Well be near 50 degrees with those clouds thinning late this morning. The suburbs you might see a peek of sunshine at 11 00, but turning partly sunny and nicer and mild at 3 00 this afternoon. And the Lehigh Valley youll get a little bit of sunshine to start with at 7 00. But its this afternoon youll see lots of sunshine and temperatures warm from the 30s into the 50s. Still some time for a few neighborhoods to drop into the 30s this morning. Delaware, the clouds lingering through the morning hours, but this afternoon 50s you can count on that. Meantime at the shore those clouds will linger into the afternoon for some late day sunshine finally peeking through and temperatures in the 50s. Today not warm enough for you . Tomorrow up to 59 degrees and then 60s for wednesday. But then rain makes a comeback, and thats going to bring our temperatures down for thursday and friday. New this morning students from our area are sharing their stories of struggle and survival. They are the young face of opioid atick. Next hear what they say got hem hooked as teens. From chasing dreams to chasing an addiction. Young adults tell nbc 10 their stories of getting hooked on opioids. Nbc 10s matt delucia talked with them and wonder why they didnt understand the risks and now what can be done to save other teens. Reporter these young men have something in common. I dislocated my shoulder. I had a knee injury from playing hockey. Reporter and something else, too. By the time i was a teen i had a fullblown habit starting with pain killers. Reporter it turned relief into a nightmare. I was craving them. All of a sudden its like this seed was planted. Reporter in recovery now. I would do anything to go back. Reporter theyre hoping to sound the alarm for students today. I never thought an addiction would happen to me. It changed everything. It made me go from a kid who was happy and excelling in sports to somebody who was depressed. Reporter the doctor at the hospital for children says opioids can be necessary at times like after surgery. However we use a whole gamut of our tools to treat pain to avoid overprescribing opiates. Reporter he made a choice when his prescription ran out. He went from the pharmacy to the street. And they become too expensive, so i switched to heroin. Reporter cheaper and quite often more dangerous, even deadly. In some neighborhoods i can leave out of my car and see a needle right across from the school. Reporter shes a prevention specialist in philly who thinks the conversation should start in kindergarten. Its a drug that can help your body if its used the right way. Reporter dr. White says it falls on medical professionals to be responsible especially with kids and teens. We do say try some other things first and use that as a backup medicine when the other medicines arent working. We also try to limit the amount we give. Reporter hes been sober now just over a year and trying to get his life back on track. I dont want to see other people get caught up in it, especially kids of young ages not knowing what theyre goingt into. And coming up, trying to solve the problem. There is not a School District across this country that is not affected by the opiate epidemic, and anybody that thinks their School District isnt is in complete denial. We look at what schools in our area are doing to stop the Opioid Crisis before it starts. A the New York Times editorial supports philadelphias plan for safe injection sites. The Editorial Board shows evidence shows that they prove affecting at slashing overdose deaths. It says u. S. Cities and states should follow their lead. Meanwhile, new video this morning is causing concern about our line safety. Watch this video. It shows a carry on bag on fire onboard a China Southern Airlines Plane yesterday. It was the luggage store above peoples heads. As you can see there was a power pack not in use obviously because it was stored above their heads. It sparked the flames. A flight attend want used bottles of water to put out the fire. Experts say it demonstrates the dangers of lithium ion batteries on planes. The concern is the fire could spread very rapidly in this cargo compartment and catch other materials on fire. Just last month a fire broke out in a bag getting screened. The faa urges passengers not to pack lithium ion batteries in checked bags. Lets get a look at the blue route this morning. Jessica boyington has you covered for your commute. Watching that to start. But there are some colder neighborhoods and pockets of fog in berks and Lehigh Valley counties. Fogfree in reading. White hall township down to 39 degrees while bethlehem is 42. A little bit of fog in easton this morning, but it will clear as temperature climbs. And well see a warmup a little bit this morning. Sunshine if youre looking for it. That happens this afternoon. Pushes us about 10 degrees above normal. In some neighborhoods up to 55 degrees. We do have lots of clouds, but theres no wet weather here. But the rain is staying to our south. Its out of the picture for today. And look at how nice and dry it is to our west. The next system that is going to affect us by the end of the week is coming in from the west coast. But it doesnt look like its going to get here before the end of the month. So we will end february on a warm and dry note. Philadelphia, the three day outlook look at these temperatures. Near 60 degrees tomorrow and 60s on wednesday. Youll see considerably warmer than normal temperatures for the suburbs and Lehigh Valley in the upper 50s wednesday afternoon. Brilliant sunshine late this afternoon and for tomorrow. New jersey youll see sunshine peek through this afternoon. A nice sunny day for tuesday. Near 60 degrees for new jersey on tuesday while its in the low 50s at the shore. Youll still get some sunshine on tuesday before the clouds return wednesday. And for delaware look at these temperatures. 60 degrees tomorrow, 62 degrees wednesday afternoon. An unusually warm and wet february. Its one of the top ten warmest and wettest. The average temperature is just over 42 degrees. Were ending the month at more than 6 degrees above average, and the fifth wettest rainfallwise with more than 6 inches of rain. That number wont change, but this number could go a little bit higher before the end of the month. Then theres the weekend, which is going to be cooler. But i think its going to be dry. Sunshine takes over in the afternoon, and then the typical first weekend of march with temperatures in the 40s. And then well see sunshine and just a few scattered clouds but no wet weather on sunday but temperatures back in the 40s sunday afternoon. That fog will be here to start with, but you can count on some sunshine here for a change this afternoon. Easton is not the only spot. We saw some really thick fog in allentown. But just in the last few minutes the visibility improved dramatically now. You can see the visibility out back down under a mile in wilmington. But the thickest fog, and its holding right now in dover. A quarter mile in atlantic city, and wildwood starting to see a little bit of an improvement. So doesnt look like its going to last long.
