Why we made Frank Of Ireland - even though it was male-dominated : Correspondents 2021 : Chortle : The UK Comedy Guide

Executive producer Clelia Mountford on Channel 4's new comedy
Next week Channel 4 launches Frank Of Ireland, a new comedy about ‘a misanthropic, narcissistic, fantasist in arrested development who thinks the world owes him something’ from brothers Brian and Domhnall Gleeson and Michael Moloney. Here executive producer Clelia Mountford from programme-makers Merman - the company she runs with Sharon Horgan – explains how the programme came about… and why it was a break from their usual female-led shows such as Motherland, Frayed and This Way Up…
We hadn’t many male-led projects on Merman’s development slate when Frank walked through our door. Not that we had any policy on developing only all-female projects, it was just what interested us and there are already plenty of male-written comedies in existence, starring men and directed by men.
