Updated: 11:14 PM EDT Apr 26, 2021 WXII12.com Web Staff Winston-Salem City Council is asking for residents' input on how the city should spend its money from the American Rescue Plan.The city is scheduled to receive $55.1 million to help recover from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.Click the video player above to watch the latest headlines from WXII 12 News.The money will be delivered in two batches: half will be delivered by May 11, 2021, and the other half will be delivered a year later.The Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Fund is designed to give cities flexibility in responding to the health emergency and in funding projects, programs or organizations that were economically impacted by the pandemic.That includes restoring local government revenue lost due to the pandemic, and government services affected by the loss of revenue. The money can also be used to provide grants to small businesses, non-profits, households, tourism, hospitality and the arts to make up for the losses caused by the pandemic. Some improvements to water, sewer and broadband infrastructure and programs may not have to be directly related to COVID-19 to be eligible for funding, city officials say.The money cannot be used to reduce taxes, delay new taxes or tax increases and cannot be deposited into pension funds.Residents will be able to voice their opinions at an online public input session at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 28 via Zoom. A link will be posted online closer to the meeting date, but will not be active until 3 p.m. the day of the meeting. Speakers will be limited to three minutes each and will speak in the order in which they sign in to the meeting starting at 3 p.m.Suggestions are also being accepted through an online form.More information about the relief fund and other pandemic relief programs can be found on the city's website.
