COLUMBUS, Ohio — Laurence Wootton, a midfielder with the Ohio State men’s soccer team, was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year Friday by the conference coaches, the league office announced. Wootton, a native of Halstead, England, also was a 2021 First Team All-Big Ten selection in addition to making the conference All-Freshman Team. He was a unanimous selection to the All-Freshman squad. Another Ohio State newcomer, Parker Grinstead, a midfielder from West Chester, Ohio, also earned a spot on the Big Ten All-Freshman team. Senior Mitch Bergman, a defender from Canal Winchester, Ohio, was named Ohio State’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Honoree.
