Worcesteria: Watching 'New Voices' winners leap to 'American Idol,' 'The Voice' Worcester Magazine THE BIG STAGE: I didn't immediately recognize Ryleigh Modig from the photograph the Telegram & Gazette ran of the 18-year-old Spencer woman competing on “The Voice.” She had changed a lot since she won WCCA TV's “New Voices Awards,” which aired in January 2017. But as soon as I clocked the name, I remembered how impressive a singer she was, and going back to watch the video of her “Voice” audition, it was clear how much she'd grown as a vocalist. It's strange, for someone who's been judging WCCA's teen singing competition from its outset, to see one of the show's winners on that sort of stage, especially the same year the the most recent champion, Chloe Belsito, is competing on “American Idol.” I always say it's important not to read too much into these competitions, that they're just a tool for an artist to use in their career, not the end destination, but that doesn't mean that getting there isn't an enormous accomplishment. Both Modig and Belsito are talented vocalists, with enormously bright futures, and it's hard not to be a little proud of them.
