We start with the latest on those historic and Deadly Wildfires in california, being fueled by dry conditions. The death toll is rising. Almost 900 firefighters on the front lines trying to contain them. Getting an upper hand here. The heavy smoke in Northern California now visible from space. We have imagery from nasa. Its pretty incredible, that image there. Heres what we though this morning. 16 large fires are burning. 5700 structures have been destroyed. 100,000 people have been evacuated. At least 40 fatalities as the deadliest wildfires in california history rage on. The conditions today will not be favorable. Were looking at more wind and low humidity. The constant stress becoming too much. You worry about where everyone is. I go to work every day concerned. But, hey, its okay. Were all together. Reporter this morning, the death toll climbing to at least 40 people. This is truly one of the greatest, if not the greatest tragedy that california has ever faced. Reporter over the last week, two million gallons of retardant dropped on these fires. The nuns fire raging out of control here in Sonoma County this morning, just 15 contained. But two other major fires, including the one that devastated the city of santa rosa, now more than 45 contained. Thats a lot of progress. Dan and paula . Indeed, linzie, thank you. As we said, the the conditions for firefighters today looking tough. Yeah, rob is tracking that part of the story for thus morning. Hi, rob. Good morning. For southern california, you saw in linzies shot, the winds not blowing too badly. Its still very, very dry. Red flag warnings out for napa and sonoma counties. The big blue h is shifting inward. Critical criteria across southern california. The santa ana winds. Blowing over the mountains, compressing down on the air, drying out as it gets to some of these valleys. Gusts of 50. That is not good. Relative humidity levels below 10 . It will be a difficult day today for sure. Rain coming, but not for awhile. Talk more about that in a bit. Paula . Thank you, rob. To the ongoing crisis in puerto rico. Its been over three weeks since maria hit. Right now, only 15 of the island has power. The governor is now out with a new estimate for when power will be fully restored. Mid december. Victor oquendo is in san juan. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning, dan and paula. Communication is also still so bad across the island, many of the people we spoke with had no idea what the governor had said about power being restored. They actually found out through us that they likely wont have power for another two months. This morning, more than 85 of puerto rico waking up without power and the governor now says it will be this way for about another two months. He doesnt expect the majority of the island to have power restored until december 15th. Two more months of sweltering heat for the people of this neighborhood outside san juan. So you live right here. Yes. Reporter but youre in your car right now for air conditioning . Yes. Reporter some muchneeded help has arrived. Southeast of san juan, where the eye of maria passed. The army just set up a hospital outside an arena. Theres a lot of musculoskeletal joint injuries. Bone, skin injuries. People cleaning up, its dark and wet. Reporter with hospitals at capacity and staffs stretched thin, this 44bed hospital is a critical lifeline. This mans home is flooded. Theres still water inside. He slipped and fell. He heard he could get help at the arena. He made the 30minute walk with a dislocated knee. This is my good knee. This is not. I was trying to wait it out. It was painful enough to come here and check out. Reporter and the army couldnt give us a timetable for how long theyll be here. They said the hospital is up and running. Theyre ready for any patient that comes through the door. Dan . Paula . Victor, thank you so much. So much suffering. And again, these are american citizens. We appreciate it. Back here on the mainland, an ominous warning to republicans from steve bannon. In a fiery speech, he says conservative voters are coming for them. David wright is at the white house for us this morning. David, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, paula and dan. Steve bannon was speaking to the values voters summit. Here in washington, d. C. His speech quite warmly received. It offered some real insights into the mentality of trump loyal lists. An angry crowd who see themselves at war with the gop establishment. This is not my war. This is our war. [ cheers and applause ] reporter trumps former chief strategist insists the president is winning that war. Every day is like Christmas Day now. I cant wait to get up. Its going to be a new package. This is the trump program. This is what we always wanted. Reporter as steve bannon sees it, trumps first year has been a trial of fire. You have the bay of pigs in venezuela. You have the cuban missile crisis in korea. You have vietnam in afghanistan. Thats not his doing. Reporter bannon says republicans and democrats share the blame. Bannon cited republican bob corkers words to the New York Times last week. We could be headed toward world war iii with the kind of comments hes making. Reporter comments that no gop senator has condemned. Corker said he gave up the game. He said, hey, theres only one or two senators up here that have any respect or admiration for President Trump. The rest of em all talk like i do. Behind closed doors. Right now, its a season of war against a gop establishment. [ cheers and applause ] reporter yet, even as bannon was blasting the republican establishment, President Trump was teeing off with one of its key members. Senator lindsey graham. This was, by our account, the 72nd day of his administration that the president visited a golf course. Usually one of his own. 72 days. Though his aides are cagey about whether he actually does golf on these outings. Yesterday, he did. Now, President Trump, as of today, has been in office 268 days. If you do the math, thats 1 out of every 4 days visiting a golf course. Dan and paula . And we know how long a round of golf can take, as well. David wright, thank you for your reporting from the white house. He had tough words for obama and his golfing habit. He certainly did. We want to bring if george stephanopoulos. First and foremost, steve bannon. Saying hes declaring war on the republican establishment. Saying this is not my war, its our war. Hes promoting primary challengers that could unseat the establishment. How much impact will he have . Already had an impact. We saw in alabama a few weeks ago, his candidate defeated the the president s candidate in that primary. Who was the incumbent senator a member of the republican establishment. He called out several republicans by name yesterday. Saying they are going to be vulnerable to primary challenges, as well. It could unseat them. Could bring in even more hardcore conservatives into the republican party. But i think the big question is, what impact will it have on the president s agenda . Will it, in fact, do anything to advance the president s agenda . We havent seen evidence of that yet. Lets talk about what the president has been doing in terms of rolling back obamacare. Hes made some pretty aggressive moves of late. You have nancy pelosi on the show this morning. Do you think what trumps been doing makes her more or less likely to want to cut a deal with him on this issue . Less. Much less. The president did two executive orders. One loosened the regulations on insurance plans. Or intends to. Things about preexisting conditions and essential benefits. More important, cutting the subsidies to Insurance Companies which help poor people pay for the insurance. Democrats are not going along with anything that repeals obamacare. But the president is making progress if you consider that progress on his agenda of repealing and replacing obamacare. Not with congress, but step by step, on his own. He seems to be forcing the issue. You have nancy pelosi on the show. You also have the u. S. Ambassador to the u. N. , nikki haley on, as well. Whats happening next on the iran deal . Trump punted it to congress. How do you think it will all play out . Hes decertified it but has not pulled out. He wants congress to come up with tougher conditions. Right now, congress doesnt appear to be ready to do that. Some in Congress Welcome what the president did. The allies saying theyll stick by the agreement. A lot will depend on how iran responds. What congress does going forward. The other big question, how is north korea going to take all this . If the president seems willing to undo the nuclear deal with iran, does it give us any hope for negotiations of any kind with north korea . Incredibly complex world out there. George, thank you very much. George will talk to nikki haley, as has been mentioned. The u. S. Ambassador. And also to democratic leader nancy pelosi, and republican senator susan collins. All on this week. Thank you, george. George has power women on the show today. Love to see that. Thanks, george. Lets check in with ron claiborne. For a look at the other news headlines. Let us.
