He is 26 yearold jamal bennet , according to police he was released from the curan fromhold correctional facility yesterday, they say he didnt even make it off the property, before committing yet another crime. Last night, police say he set his sights on a corrections officer and, finishing up a shift trying to get to his car philadelphia prison commissioner blanch carney briefed us this afternoon. She said officer under attack was 27 year veteran michael m erittay that bennet was trying to steel his car. While being pummeled he was able to grab his gun. Police say meritay may have saved his life by shooting bennet in the chest. At that point correctional staff responded, the police responded, and medics responded. And good news is he will be okay, but this has been brought to the forefront an ongoing issue between local co s union and philadelphia prisons department, that is inmate, their families and guests parking in the same lot as employees do, and local Union Representative alread iens owe north released a statement in part reading that sadly commissioner of prisons will put an inmate family and visitors first before the safety of the employees, and no other prison allows visitors to park with correctional staff but the Philadelphia Department of prisons does. The parking arrangement and the shared parking with civilian and staff at the house of corrections has been in place for over 20 years.
