Flexible brains make for right fit
Being squeezable may be the key to finding space for the brain in mammals, including humans, according to new research.
An international study, co-led by Flinders University’s Dr Vera Weisbecker, has revealed that marsupial mammals like possums, kangaroos, and wombats appear to have a lot of flexibility when it comes to accommodating their brains into their skulls.
“The brain is one of the heaviest parts of the head, particularly in smaller mammals. But it needs to be placed in a way that doesn’t interfere with the many vital functions of the head, such as seeing, hearing, smelling and of course feeding,” says Dr. Weisbecker. ....

Poor brain cancer survival outcomes on rise

Date Time
Poor brain cancer survival outcomes on rise
A first of its kind Australian study has revealed rates of brain lymphoma have quadrupled since the 1980s with only 33% of people surviving 5 years after receiving a diagnosis.
Brain lymphoma is a Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in which cancer cells from lymph tissue form in the brain or spinal cord. As the human eye is connected to the brain, the lymphoma can also start in the eye (retinal lymphoma) and later spread to the brain.
First author of the study published in the journal Cancers, Dr Alexandra Farrall at Flinders University, says the results showed increasing brain cancer rates in both elderly and younger Australian adults, and much lower survival outcomes than those reported for lymphoma that occurs outside the brain. ....

The Andrews Labor Government has added 280 metropolitan and 170 regional services to the network every week, alongside new capacity indicator technology that will give passengers on Melbourne’s trains access to information about how busy their train or station will be – helping people stay safe as we move through our recovery from the pandemic.
After four months of extensive testing and trials, the new online tool called
