The United States on Monday led governments around the world in calling for the restoration of Myanmar s democracy after the military staged a coup, arresting civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other politicians.
US President Joe Biden urged the international community to come together in one voice to press the Burmese military to immediately relinquish the power they have seized .
The United States removed sanctions on Burma over the past decade based on progress toward democracy, Biden said in a statement, using Myanmar s former name. ....

The US led governments around the world in calling for the restoration of Myanmar’s democracy on February 1 after the military staged a coup, arresting civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other politicians.
The calls came as the new Myanmar military government pledged to hold another national election and award the right to form a new government to the winning political party. ....

YANGON (AFP) – The United States (US) led governments around the world in calling for the restoration of Myanmar’s democracy yesterday after the military staged a coup, arresting civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other politicians.
The US “will take action against those responsible if these steps are not reversed”, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in a statement.
She added that the US opposes any attempt to alter the outcome of the November elections, which handed Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD) an overwhelming landslide, but sparked allegations of vote irregularities by the routed military-backed party. ....

The citizens of Myanmar woke up on Feb. 1 to find that they were under military rule after a coup deposed the country’s elected leader, Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. She was detained by the military, along with other senior government officials.
Troops patrolled the streets after the military declared a one-year state of emergency.
The coup occurred on the day parliament was to convene and form a new government. Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy secured the overwhelming majority (83 percent) of seats in the Nov. 8, 2020, election, the second contested poll since the end of military rule in 2011. ....
