Vaccination formula: rapid vaccination could avoid lockdown even with rising infection numbers

Vaccination formula: rapid vaccination could avoid lockdown even with rising infection numbers
As it has from the beginning, the pandemic continues to primarily affect older people. If the entire population of Germany became infected with SARS-CoV-2, statistically 1.5 million of those over 60 would die; among those under 60, the death toll would “only” be 75,000. This is why – in addition to certain particularly exposed population groups – vaccination strategies often prioritise the elderly with the aim of avoiding overburdening the health system with severe COVID-19 cases and high death rates. After all, vaccinating just a quarter of the population can prevent 95 percent of deaths. ....

4 ways Australia's COVID vaccine rollout has been bungled

Director, Health Program, Grattan Institute
The first announcement, in August last year – that Australia had negotiated vaccine deals – set the tone for the rollout of “announceables”. Within hours, this initial announcement unravelled as it became clear it wasn’t a “deal”, but in fact a letter of intent.
The federal government has made vaccine announcements thick and fast since then, with every minor milestone celebrated with media hype. It was only when vaccine announcements had to become actual vaccinations that the public became aware of the chasm between the rhetoric and the reality.
The vaccine rollout has been characterised by four key mistakes, mainly caused by our leaders giving priority to a good political story over good policy. ....

The following is a joint statement calling for the Australian Government to provide further emergency health support to Papua New Guinea.
Community transmission of COVID-19 across almost every province in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is growing, with hundreds of new cases being identified daily.
Epidemiological estimates are that infections could have now reached over 100,000 cases in PNG and could reach one million cases within a few weeks.
The PNG Epidemic Response Group, including Burnet Institute, is an alliance of leading Medical Research Institutes, Australian Churches, professional services, and development and humanitarian organisations operating in PNG. The Group is calling on the Australian Government to release a greater amount of vaccines from Australian supplies to urgently tackle the epidemic in PNG before it spirals further out of control. ....

EU and WFP partner to improve nutrition in Central Sahel by strengthening local food systems

WFP
DAKAR/BRUSSELS – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the European Union (EU) today announced that they are partnering in an 18-month project to improve the production, availability and consumption of nutritious foods to prevent malnutrition among women and children in Africa’s Central Sahel region comprising Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.
The project, backed with a contribution of €20 million by the EU through the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa, will see WFP provide immediate assistance to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition while supporting the entire value chain for nutritious foods.
The combined effects of conflict and climate change, compounded by the socio-economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, are disrupting food security and nutrition in the region. Close to 3 million children are at risk of becoming acutely malnourished across the three countries in the Central Sahel. ....
