IOM and UNHCR call for improved safeguards for the displaced on the frontlines of climate emergency

Geneva – IOM, the International Organization for Migration, and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), are calling on states to strengthen the protection and assistance of people displaced in the context of disasters and climate change, ahead of a virtual conference co-hosted today, 4 February, with PDD, the state-led Platform on Disaster Displacement, currently chaired by the Government of Fiji, with the Government of France as vice-chair.
This commemoration also comes on the heels of two bilateral Memoranda of Understanding signed by IOM and UNHCR with PPD on 9 December, to renew their commitments on disaster displacement.
The memoranda formalize the long-standing partnership between IOM, UNHCR and PDD and come as the climate emergency has converged with the COVID-19 pandemic, ongoing conflict, record numbers of forcibly displaced, economic turmoil, and growing social upheaval. ....

On a panel together at the global maritime environmental congress (gmec) as part of SMM Digital, there were few areas of common ground between NGO and shipping panellists.
One clear flashpoint was the IMO’s initial GHG strategy and its goals of reducing GHG emissions per transport work by at least 40% by 2030 compared to 2008, and the 2050 target of reducing total annual emissions from shipping by at least 50% compared to 2008 levels. ....

Islamabad:Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam has said the effective monitoring of forests is imperative for containing deforestation and forestland degradation and taming global warming-caused climate change.
There has been large-scale deforestation and land degradation in the country over last several years for want of effective forest monitoring system, which helps detect logging operations in forest areas and natural habitats of outstanding significance or critical importance, in a matter of minutes, he told the launching ceremony of the National Forest Monitoring System here on Monday. ....
