RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - Early in the year it was forecast that Guyana would grow by 85% in 2020. However, the domestic and international effects of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic have lowered expectations and growth is now projected at 30.9%, writes th United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in its latest report
The first case of COVID-19 in Guyana was recorded on March 12th, 2020. While the disease initially spread slowly in the country, it began to accelerate in August and by the end of October there were over 4,000 . . .

Biden Team Considering Plan to Stop Deportation of Hondurans and Guatemalans


According to Reuters, Joe Biden s administration is considering a plan to help stop more than a million Honduran and Guatemalan immigrants from being deported to their home countries, which were severely damaged by Hurricanes Eta and Iota in November. The team is considering granting those people Temporary Protected Status, which would allow those already in the United States to stay and work legally if their home countries have been affected by natural disasters, armed conflicts, or other events that prevent their safe return. The designations last from six to 18 months and can be renewed.
They re looking into TPS the same way they re looking into a number of things to decide on the right course of action, one source told Reuters. Circumstances on the ground certainly warrant that. ....

HAVANA, Dec 17 (Reuters) - Cuba s already cash-strapped economy shrank 11% in 2020 due to the pandemic and tougher U.S. sanctions but the government thwarted attempts by anti-communists to exploit this momentary weakness in a bid to topple it, President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on Thursday.
Addressing a year-end session of the Communist-run country’s parliament, Diaz-Canel celebrated Cuba s successful management of its coronavirus outbreak despite exceptional economic conditions and predicted 6% to 7% economic growth next year.
Yet the government s estimate for this year s contraction was even more dire than that of the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, which this week predicted an 8.5% contraction for Cuba compared to a 7.7% regional decline. ....
