At the start of the pandemic in March we took the decision to make online access to our news free of charge by taking down our paywall. At a time where accurate information about Covid-19 was vital to our community, this was the right decision – even though it meant a drop in our income. In order to help safeguard the future of our journalism, the time has now come to reinstate our paywall.
However,
To access all other news will require a subscription, as it did pre-pandemic.
The good news is that for the whole of December we will be running a special discounted offer to get 3 months access for the price of one month. Thank you for supporting us during this incredibly challenging time. ....

Politicians must make strong commitments to ending animal cruelty

I RECENTLY attended a series of webinars on animal welfare issues, organised by the Scottish animal welfare organisation OneKind.
These were very interesting presentations from a range of animal welfare organisations, such as the League Against Cruel Sports and Crustacean Compassion, followed by Q&As.
As a floating voter at the forthcoming Scottish elections, any particular political party’s policies and commitments on animal welfare issues will influence how I vote.
I was saddened to learn that snares are still used, as are legal traps in Scotland. These snares kill wildlife in the cruelest possible way, but they are also indiscriminate, and cats and dogs have been known to get caught up in snares. We want them banned. ....

Hamilton scopes out growth for Netwatch in UK and Europe

“Our R&D team is managed out of Carlow,” she says, by way of example.
Covid has changed the course of many people’s lives over the past year, and Hamilton is pragmatic about its effect on her – and on the firm.
“At a personal level, I would sometimes think to myself: ‘Wouldn’t it be great now to be on San Clemente Pier, walking along the beach.’ So yes, there are times when I certainly think it would be great to have that single-minded purpose.”
But at the same time, she says that in many areas of business and life there has been a big “reset” following Covid. ....

READERS' LETTERS: National crusade to address mental health pandemic

Abertay students put lockdown signs in their windows at Parker House, Dundee, during an outbreak.
Sir, – As a coalition of leading providers of care and support to vulnerable children and young people, we echo the call by the Scottish Association for Mental Health in its manifesto for the Scottish Parliament elections for “radical action” to combat a growing mental health crisis.
We have for some time raised concerns over a potential lost generation of vulnerable children and young people, whose mental health is being impacted even further by the pandemic.
It should however be highlighted that prior to the pandemic, cases of poor mental health were at unprecedented levels and there are a growing number of vulnerable children who cannot access services. ....
