Winner of our TeleTots contest is revealed

LITTLE Willow Robb has been crowned the TeleTots winner for 2020 after a record number of votes were cast in the family favourite contest.
The 20-month-old Greenock toddler was celebrating yesterday after all our finalists won the hearts of our readers during the competition.
Our counting team were kept busy as the votes piled in.
Almost 11,000 were cast throughout the competition.
One-year-old Alfie McNeill, also from Greenock, was the runner-up and in third place was 13-month-old Jack Heaton.
Willow s proud mum Julie Robb, 38, who lives in Gateside Gardens, said: We are just delighted.
We want to thank every single person who voted for Willow. ....

Inverclyde MSP blames UK Government cuts for new Greenock prison delay

INVERCLYDE S MSP has blamed continuous cuts in UK Government funding for the further lengthy delay in delivering a new prison for Greenock and suggests turning the site into allotments.
Stuart McMillan says that reduced budgets from Westminster have contributed to the the situation, despite the chosen plot for the prison being bought and cleared by the Scottish Government more than nine years ago at a cost of nearly £8 million of public money.
Mr McMillan says he now wants to see the site of the former Greenock High School being used either as a skate park or for allotments, while the town must wait until at least 2025/26 for it to be developed by the Scottish Prison Service (SPS). ....

Nurse who served at Greenock prison has retired following 54 years of exemplary public service

A NURSE who served at Greenock prison has been praised after he retired following 54 years of exemplary public service.
Devoted Charlie Hoggit has cared for offenders here for the last decade and beforehand he spent his working life helping vulnerable patients.
The 73-year-old has devoted his whole working life to the NHS.
Before going into the prison at Gateside he also worked with psychiatric patients, as well as veterans in Erskine Hospital.
But he says his time working at HMP Greenock was the highlight.
Charlie said: “These years at the prison have been amongst the happiest of my career.
“Yes it’s challenging but I was accepted very early and the prisoners seemed to take to me. ....

Plans to replace century-old Greenock Prison shelved for years

PLANS to replace Greenock s 110-year-old prison have been shelved yet again until at least 2026 five years after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon urged clarity on the matter.
The decision by the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) comes after Ms Sturgeon s government spent nearly £8m of public money on buying and clearing a proposed site in the wouth west of the town for a new jail in 2011.
News of the delay has sparked deep disappointment within Inverclyde Council.
Local authority leader Stephen McCabe yesterday issued a direct challenge to SNP MSP Stuart McMillan over the future suitability of the existing Gateside jail, which was built in 1910. ....
