If you or a loved one have come down with SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19, you know it often takes hold in the respiratory system. This image offers a striking example of exactly what happens to cells in the human airway when this coronavirus infects them.
This colorized scanning electron microscope (SEM) image shows SARS-CoV-2-infected human lung cells (purple) covered in hair-like cilia (blue). Those cilia line the inner surface of the airways and help to clear mucus (yellow-green) containing dust and other debris from the lungs. Emerging from the surface of those infected airway cells are many thousands of coronavirus particles (red). ....

Hillsborough, N.C. Federal prosecutors and local law enforcement announced a bust Thursday of a drug trafficking ring that funneled more than a thousand pounds of marijuana, hundreds of kilograms of cocaine and other drugs throughout the campuses of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University and Appalachian State University.
More than $1.5 million in drug sales were made from 2017 to 2020 by the defendants, according to court records.
Matt Martin, U.S. attorney for the middle district of North Carolina, and Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood expressed surprise and dismay at the amount of narcotics being moved on college campuses and the attitude of those involved. ....

The Supreme Court has accepted the NCAA’s appeal in a case on the restrictions on compensation for college athletes. It comes on the heels of the NCAA being dragged into court over discrimination, and it highlights the corrupt structure of the organization.
The NCAA’s appeal comes after the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against its ability to restrict compensation for college athletes on antitrust grounds. The NCAA has been hauled into court over antitrust law repeatedly by former college athletes.
Another lawsuit was brought against the NCAA last week by three athletes at historically black colleges and universities. These athletes alleged that the NCAA’s academic requirements for player eligibility are discriminatory against HBCUs. While this would normally sound ridiculous, the athletes have a point. It turns out that 72% of teams that have been banned ....

Twenty-one people are facing federal charges in a drug bust involving fraternities on multiple college campuses in North Carolina.
