Capital Calls: Third Point activist flips script on Dan Loeb

IMITATION GAME. Activists are trying to turn the tables on corporate agitator Dan Loeb at his London investment vehicle. Asset Value Investors, which owns 10% of Loebâs $858 million Third Point Offshore Investors (TPOGu.L), has criticised a lacklustre plan to raise the fundâs uninspiring valuation. They have a point: shares trade at a 14% markdown to net asset value, a discount which has broadly persisted over the past five years. By contrast, AVI claims the median NAV discount for comparable London-listed closed-end funds is just 4%.
Loeb at least recognises the problem. In April Third Point put forward a plan to reduce the discount to 7.5%. But measures including adding extra leverage and increasing the proportion of assets in unlisted private equity are unconvincing. And two proposed offers to buy back shares at a mere 2% discount to NAV would only take place in 2024 and 2027. Such weak suggestio ....

Some investors are revisiting a popular trade that has largely been out of favor since last yearâs market tumble: betting against stock market turbulence.
Assets in the ProShares Short VIX Short-Term Futures ETF , a popular vehicle for betting against stock market gyrations, have nearly doubled over the last six months to $562 million.
Investors have also reaped big gains betting against products designed to profit from volatile markets.
Short sellers targeting the Barclays iPath Series B S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN logged paper profits of $319 million, or 48%, making VXX one of the most profitable shorted ETFs this year, S3 Partners data through May 14 showed. ....

U.S. consumer prices surged in April, with a measure of underlying inflation blowing past the Federal Reserveâs 2% target and posting its largest annual gain since 1992, reflecting pent-up demand as the economy reopens.
