Hazel Jackson, Leon âBuddyâ Glover and Barack Obama are among the names School District of Lancaster is considering to rename two of its schools. The school districtâs 15-member renaming committee this week unveiled five options for Southeast Middle School, formerly Edward Hand Middle School, and seven for Buchanan Elementary School. Itâs the latest development in a process that started last summer to rename up to five Lancaster schools to reflect the districtâs values today. mcschools.net BATON ROUGE, La. – Today the Louisiana Department of Education released the names of 21 students selected as finalists in the state’s annual Students of the Year competition. The 21 students selected include one elementary, middle and high school student from each of the state’s seven regions. The finalists represent traditional public, public charter and nonpublic schools. It’s kind of heartbreaking to be forced out of that, Katrina Gray said. Our kids should still be allowed to go to Barfield, said Lacee Godman, adding that Stevens Bend is much closer to their existing school than Plainview. ....
In the words of Jacksonâs granddaughter, Amber Holland, âShe was sadly mistaken.â Jackson spent years calling to inquire about job openings, submitting applications and offering recommendations â all while working the assembly line at the former RCA Lancaster Tube Plant on New Holland Avenue. But there was one step in the application process that constantly caused her issues: the photograph. When school officials noticed from her picture that she was a Black woman, theyâd reject her application, Holland said. Eventually, Jackson took another approach. Every Friday, she spent the day sitting in the superintendentâs office, waiting for her opportunity to come. And, in 1961, it did. ....
