WASHINGTON, D.C. A recently-released study shows Wisconsin was among 20 states that are well-prepared to handle public health emergencies.
The report by Trust for American’s Health, a Washington D.C.-based nonpartisan public health policy organization, ranked the preparedness performance of states based on 10 indicators including nurse licensure, hospital participation in healthcare coalitions, flu vaccination rates and public health funding.
John Auerbach, the president and CEO of the organization says Wisconsin checked quite a few of those boxes.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) Wisconsin school superintendent candidate Jill Underly accused her opponent Deborah Kerr of being transphobic during a forum Thursday because Kerr supports prohibiting transgender students from playing girls sports.
The spirited back and forth came during a virtual question and answer session hosted by the Milwaukee Press Association just five days before Tuesday s election. The winner will serve a four-year term as secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the state s top education official.
The candidates were asked whether they support bills introduced by legislative Republicans that would prohibit transgender girls from participating in girls and women s sports at the high school and college levels. EDWARDSVILLE Two men have been charged with several theft-related felonies Wednesday, including stealing from the State Park Fire Department in January.
Joseph T. Wells, 35, of St. Ann, Missouri, and Aaron D. Jackson, 40, of O’Fallon, Illinois, were each charged March 31 with possession of burglary tools and theft under $500 (second subsequent offense), Class 4 felonies. Wells also was charged with theft from coin-operated machine (second subsequent offense), a Class 4 felony.
The case was presented by the Madison County Sheriff’s Department. The State Park Fire Protection District includes both Madison and St. Clair counties. ....
