Cheddar cheese, waterparks and farmers’ markets … thinking of Wisconsin usually brings up these fun Midwest staples. Across the state, residents think fondly of their hometowns, and here in Madison, we pride ourselves on liberal political leanings and burgeoning art culture.
But Wisconsin has under-publicized some of its more painful attributes. This state has some of the highest racial disparities in the country, especially when it comes to prison demographics.
Some communities are more ‘unlivable’ for Black Americans than others but overall, the entire state of Wisconsin has roots in discriminatory behavior, which leads to shockingly high incarceration rates for people of color. ....

If Congress passes President Joe Biden s $2 trillion infrastructure proposal, Amtrak says it would add dozens of new routes, including service between the Twin Cities and Duluth and a second daily trip from the Twin Cities to Chicago.
In the American Jobs Plan proposal, Biden a known train enthusiast and frequent Amtrak rider, which earned him the nickname Amtrak Joe has designated $80 billion specifically for passenger and freight rail.
Amtrak on Wednesday said if Congress does pass the proposal, it would add up to 30 new routes and expand service to 160 more communities across the country over the next 15 years. Doing so would boost ridership by 20 million passengers (in 2019, Amtrak served 32 million riders), Amtrak estimates. ....

UW students petition for wellness days after spring break cancellation · The Badger Herald

According to UW Director of News and Media Relations Meredith McGlone, these are sensible doubts.
At this point, any change to the spring calendar would significantly disrupt classes, McGlone said in an email to The Badger Herald.
Though the petition was created only a few weeks ago, UW’s decision to cancel spring break was put into effect last September, said Assistant Vice Chancellor of University Communications John Lucas.
At that time, university officials could not have anticipated the stress students face today, Lucas said. Instead, they made the most prudent decision they could, given the limited information they had then. ....
