portions of the southeast, gulf coast region, but also into the southwest. that's where you're really going to start to see the temperatures skyrocket in the coming days. now one thing to note, shreveport hit 110 yesterday tying their all-time temperature record. houston did the same thing reaching 109, tying their all-time heat record. you still have a lot of areas that are going to be excessively hot. houston, we just talked, hitting the 109. they are going to get awfully close to that tomorrow. peaking at 107. new orleans looking at temperatures in the triple digits, but monday we finally start to see the dip back down closer to normal. and then it continues tuesday and wednesday into the upcoming week. we have already started to see the temperatures retreating. a lot less red in the midwest. that's beginning to continue to shrink down towards the gulf coast region through the weekend before finally getting at least a little bit of a reprieve next week. out to the southwest, it's the opposite story. temperatures are actually going to continue to go up.

louisiana, topping out at 110. they're not alone. houston tied their all-time record the day before on thursday when they reached 109 trees. now, houston is still going to be very hot today. they peak on sunday with a high temperature only two degrees off from that record of 107. dallas peaks today. new orleans is looking at temperatures pretty consistent the next two days. but then we start to see the temperatures trop back town at least for the upcoming week. new orleans, it's still expected to remain in the triple digits, but then you'll see the temperatures coming back closer to the normal. we've already started to see the relief in the upper midwest. all of this red cover had been as far north as minneapolis a fu-tes ago. we're starting to see that shrink back down to the south, and we'll continue to see it shrink even further as we go into the next 24 to 48 hours. nashville, st. louis, little rock are going to start seeing

idensland. turning now to oppressive heat. 90 million people and more than 15 states are waking up to heat alerts this morning. >> in the south, scorching triple-digit heat is expected this weekend. but we could see a cooldown just around the corner. let's get to meteorologist allison chinchar. what does it look like? >> i think there's a lot of folks really hoping it would come sooner rather than later. two locations tied their all-time record highs. they hit 110 on friday and houston sit hiting 109 on thursday. both of those places still under excessive heat alerts for this today and we additional have additional ones in the southwestern united states. we're going to continue to see the temperatures jumping up in the coming days. and up to 11 on monday. phoenix 113 jumping to 115 on tuesday.

that system moving to the northeast. the images here tonight part of i i-90 shut down near cleveland. some drivers band onning cars. more than 150 flights canceled in detroit. passengers dragging luggage through flooded airport roads. and now as the system moves east, it is set to impact the morning commute from new york city to philadelphia to washington, d.c. so, of course, let's get right to senior meteorologist rob marciano, tracking it all for us. hey, rob. >> reporter: hi, david. the storms refiring after a really rough morning across parts of ohio. the entire great lakes region tonight is under the gun. wisconsin through michigan. back through cleveland, ohio, again, and into parts of western pennsylvania. damaging winds, large hail, isolated tornadoes. and a flood watch. and look at that explosion over detroit. then cleveland, then columbus, into the early morning hours. and then likely holding together as it heads towards the i-95 corridor, new york metro by right at the morning rush hour. now, this is going to knock down some of the heat. chicago, you hit 100 degrees today. first 100 in august since 1991. houston, you hit 109, that ties an all-time record.
