Tennessee Titans betting big on Bud Dupree to solve long-standing pass-rush woes

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Finding an impact pass-rusher has been near the top of Tennessee Titans general manager Jon Robinson's list since he took over in 2016. Robinson's attempts to address it have included selecting Kevin Dodd with the 33rd overall pick in the 2016 draft, signing 37-year-old outside linebacker Cameron Wake to a three-year, $23 million contract in 2019, and investing more than $20 million in Vic Beasley and Jadeveon Clowney last year.
None of those moves panned out.
"That’s one thing that we’ve got to do better is affect the quarterback. That comes in a myriad of ways," Robinson said in a virtual news conference in February. "It’s rushing the passer, it’s coverage, it’s blitzing, there’s a lot of ways to affect the passer, but yeah, that’s something that is high on our list. I think we would love to have that guy. We want all of our players to be successful, including the edge-rush guys. We’re looking for those kinds of players, willing to invest resources."

With Andy Dalton gone, which way will Dallas Cowboys turn for backup QB?

FRISCO, Texas -- When quarterback Andy Dalton signed with the Dallas Cowboys last year, it was with the idea of resetting his career and finding a starting spot in 2021.
Last season, Dalton went 4-5 in nine starts as Dak Prescott's replacement and will sign a one-year deal worth up to $13 million with the Chicago Bears with at least the chance to be their No. 1 quarterback.
So what will the Cowboys do for their No. 2 quarterback now?
Dallas has Garrett Gilbert, Cooper Rush and Ben DiNucci under contract behind Prescott, who signed a four-year, $160 million deal last week. Gilbert played well in his one start -- the first of his career -- last season against the Pittsburgh Steelers, completing 21 of 38 passes for 243 yards with a touchdown and an interception. DiNucci, a seventh-round pick a year ago, did not play well in his one start in 2020 against the Philadelphia Eagles, completing 21 of 40 passes for 180 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

Trade destinations for Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz

PHILADELPHIA -- The 2021 NFL league year is upon us and tight end Zach Ertz is still a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.
That has some people scratching their heads. The sides have appeared destined for a split ever since extension talks broke down last offseason, putting strain on the relationship in the process. Ertz is ripe for a fresh start. Philadelphia is tight against the salary cap, has Dallas Goedert in the fold and is in the midst of a youth movement. All the signs are there.
There have been efforts toward getting a deal done behind the scenes. The Eagles granted Ertz permission to seek a trade about a month ago. But the proposed compensation in return for the three-time Pro Bowler clearly hasn't bowled the Eagles over.

Kansas City Chiefs' NFL free-agent signings 2021: Joe Thuney begins OL rebuild

What it means: Charlton was mainly a situational pass-rusher last season, his first with the Chiefs, before it ended for him seven games in because of a leg injury. Look for the Chiefs to use Charlton in a similar role this year. He could pair with Frank Clark as the Chiefs' edge rushers on passing downs. Charlton had two sacks and was in general a reliable source of pressure.
What's the risk: Charlton is a situational player. While he brings upside as a pass-rusher, he doesn't hold up well against the run so the Chiefs need to be careful how they use Charlton. The Chiefs are willing to live with this if he rushes the quarterback as effectively as he did last season.

New York Giants' 2020 NFL free-agent signings - New York Giants Blog- ESPN

NFL free agency is off and running, and we're keeping track of every major signing, trade and release of the 2021 offseason, with analysis from our NFL Nation reporters and grades from our experts. The new league year began March 17, meaning free-agent signings could be made official after that. The first round of the 2021 NFL draft begins April 29 on ESPN.
The New York Giants entered free agency this year in the midst of rebuild with plenty of needs, despite some positive signs last season. One of those needs was a No. 1 wide receiver. Check that one off. They also made a run at Leonard Floyd, but he returned to the Rams, so a dominant edge rusher will have to wait. But a backup quarterback, depth at running back and another tight end were among the positions addressed during the first week of free agency. And the Giants added to their cornerback depth by signing Adoree' Jackson on Monday.

Ryan Fitzpatrick's arrival won't keep Washington from drafting a QB early

ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Football Team knows exactly what it's getting in quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick: a guy who can move the ball, will be fun and at times maddening, and can serve as a mentor. Fitzpatrick will also turn 39 during the season, which is why his arrival doesn't signal the end of Washington's quarterback search.
Fitzpatrick is what everyone thinks he is: a stopgap quarterback who can help a team win now while waiting for someone else to help later. And that player could still come through the draft.
Had Washington pursued a different quarterback -- whether it be former first-round picks such as Mitchell Trubisky (Bears), Marcus Mariota (Raiders) or Sam Darnold (Jets) -- it would possibly have been more tempted to see if that guy could still develop into a quality starter.

Arizona Cardinals' NFL free-agent signings 2021: J.J. Watt a splashy start

What it means: The Cardinals needed a WR2 as bad as any position heading into free agency and the seem to have found that with Green, who will be 33 when the season starts. He has the potential to be a dynamic complement to DeAndre Hopkins, giving the Cardinals a solid one-two punch at receiver. With as much attention as Hopkins gets, Green will face plenty of one-on-ones, giving quarterback Kyler Murray the types of options he's been missing in Arizona. And if Green plays up to his potential, then Arizona could have as formidable of a receiving duo as there is in the NFL.

New York Jets' NFL free-agent signings 2021: Jarrad Davis adds much-needed LB help

The New York Jets have been one of the most active teams, signing four projected starters -- defensive linemen Carl Lawson and Sheldon Rankins, linebacker Jarrad Davis and wide receiver Corey Davis. They also landed two players who figure to see playing time in sub packages, wide receiver Keelan Cole Sr. and safety Lamarcus Joyner. They still have several holes, especially on offense. The line still needs significant work.

Cam Newton's contract shows Patriots are not promising him starting job

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Quick-hit thoughts and notes around the New England Patriots and NFL:
Cam fallout: Here are some of the biggest takeaways from the Patriots' one-year agreement with Cam Newton on Friday:
Follow the money -- The specifics of the contract speak volumes about the Patriots' thinking. As ESPN NFL analyst Tim Hasselbeck said on SportsCenter, it's a contract that one would expect a backup to sign. Newton will earn $5.1 million if he's healthy and on the roster as a backup, with upside to $6.6 million if he starts all season and $8.6 million if he starts and the team makes the playoffs. The rest of the money he can earn, up to a total of $13.6 million, is based on honors and how far New England might advance in the playoffs. So this isn't the Patriots saying, "Cam is definitely our guy" as much as it's "We wanted someone in place before the start of free agency; we assessed all the free-agent options; and the idea of trying to build on 2020 with Cam -- at a modest financial price -- is the best choice right now based on the alternatives."

What the Kansas City Chiefs will do at receiver if Sammy Watkins walks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs thought wide receiver Sammy Watkins was so vital in 2018 they signed him as a free agent despite the presence of pass-catching stars Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. They thought he was so important to keep around last year that when facing a tight salary-cap situation they fought to keep him on a reduced contract.
The Chiefs, for the first time since making Patrick Mahomes their starting quarterback in 2018, may soon find out what life is like without Watkins. He's scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, and though the Chiefs would take him back at their price, there's no guarantee that will happen.
