Commanders in familiar spot, but already running out of time

Washington is accustomed to slow starts. But this season, a late surge might not be enough to get the team back into playoff contention.

A 28-point effort vs. the Jags looked like the start of something fun for Wentz. It wasn't. But the Commanders remain optimistic.

Ryan Fitzpatrick's arrival won't keep Washington from drafting a QB early

ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Football Team knows exactly what it's getting in quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick: a guy who can move the ball, will be fun and at times maddening, and can serve as a mentor. Fitzpatrick will also turn 39 during the season, which is why his arrival doesn't signal the end of Washington's quarterback search.
Fitzpatrick is what everyone thinks he is: a stopgap quarterback who can help a team win now while waiting for someone else to help later. And that player could still come through the draft.
Had Washington pursued a different quarterback -- whether it be former first-round picks such as Mitchell Trubisky (Bears), Marcus Mariota (Raiders) or Sam Darnold (Jets) -- it would possibly have been more tempted to see if that guy could still develop into a quality starter.

After three memorable years with Washington, Alex Smith starts new chapter

ASHBURN, Va. -- In one interview after another this offseason, Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith sounded like someone who was ready to keep playing. He had proved a point by returning to the field; he also discovered there was more he felt he could do.
Washington released him on Friday, freeing up $14.9 million of salary-cap space in 2021 with the move, and will continue its quest to find a long-term solution at quarterback. But that doesn't mean Smith's football journey has ended.
Some teams make sense for him: the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he could be reunited with his college coach, Urban Meyer, and help mentor projected No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence; the Chicago Bears, where he'd be paired with Matt Nagy, one of Smith's coaches for five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs; or even the San Francisco 49ers, his original team.

Washington QB search: From Deshaun Watson to Alex Smith, 'nothing is off the table'

Washington might prefer a mobile quarterback, but it's not a prerequisite.
"One of the beauties of what we do offensively is we're not stuck on one particular style of play for our quarterback," Rivera said. "We're stuck on the right kind of person."
As Washington searches for that person -- one who would represent an upgrade over its current group of Alex Smith, Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke -- here's a look at scenarios that could play out this offseason:
Run it back with Alex
Rivera said he has talked with Smith, and bringing the veteran back as the starter remains a possibility because there's a solid chance Smith wants to keep playing. If Washington can't find an upgrade over Smith and is confident he can hold up over a 16-game season, it will stick with him. The team would build up other areas of the offense -- the line and wide receiver -- and possibly draft a quarterback to develop, then aggressively pursue another quarterback in 2022.

Buccaneers' Tom Brady sends jersey to Washington's Chase Young

TAMPA, Fla. – One week after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Washington Football Team 31-23 in the wild-card round of the playoffs, quarterback Tom Brady made good on his word, sending rookie defensive end Chase Young an autographed jersey, which Young posted about on Instagram Saturday.
On it, Brady wrote “Good Luck!” and “Go Blue!” playing up the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry. Brady, who went to Michigan, suspected that was part of the reason Young, who went to Ohio State, said after Washington clinched a playoff berth, “I want Tom Brady!”
Chase Young has received his @TomBrady jersey.
The Bucs had Brady miked up throughout the wild-card game. At one point, Young went up to him and said, “I’ve gotta shake your hand. ... It’s all respect.”

Playoffs on the line for Washington at Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17

Matchup rating: 23.1 |
: WSH -1.5 (43.5)
What to watch for: The Eagles set a record with 13 different offensive line combinations over their first 14 games, and further changes could be coming if left tackle Jordan Mailata isn't cleared from concussion protocol. Regardless, Philadelphia has its hands full against a Washington defense that ranks fifth in sacks with 44.
-- Tim McManus
Bold prediction: Regardless of starting quarterback, it'll be the defense and run game that flourish for Washington. Running back Antonio Gibson will run for 75 yards and a touchdown, and defensive end Chase Young will record two sacks. But maybe this is the boldest prediction: Washington will score on its opening possession for the first time all year.

Washington QB Taylor Heinicke's journey: From brats to NCAA records to seltzer sprays

Editor's note: Taylor Heinicke will make his first career playoff start on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after starter Alex Smith was made inactive with a calf injury. Here's what you need to know about Heinicke.
ASHBURN, Va. -- As Washington Football Team quarterback Taylor Heinicke waited out a TV break during his first NFL drive in two years, rookie defensive end Chase Young ran up to him. He wanted to encourage Heinicke. The onetime undrafted free agent with 58 career passes on his résumé stopped Young.
"I've got you, bro," Heinicke told him. "This is what I do."
