Gilas' comeback vs. Jordan falls short

Photo courtesy of FIBA BOCAUE - Jordan overcame a Gilas Pilipinas comeback and won, 91-90, in their FIBA World Cup Qualifiers clash on Monday night at the Philippine Arena. A red-hot first half turned out to be just enough for the Jordanians as Gilas could not complete a comeback from 25 points down. Jordan sizzled early on and raced to a 33-14 first-quarter lead. Although Gilas made some feelers in the second quarter, Jordan finished the quarter strong to enter halftime leading, 60-41. Gilas pulled off a huge second-half comeback and even tied the game multiple times, the last at 88-all with 1:48 left. However, a free throw from Freddie Ibrahim off a Scottie Thompson away-from-ball foul plus a Caden Alnajdawi dunk afterward put Jordan up for good, 91-88, with 1:42 remaining. Justin Brownlee kept Gilas in the game with a mid-range jumper with 1:30 left even as Gilas forced crucial stops later on. Thompson had a chance to redeem himself, but he missed two free throws that could have given Gilas the lead with 31.3 left. Gilas nearly forced a 24-second violation on Jordan, though, in the next play and had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but Ray-Ray Parks missed a bank shot from mid-range at the final buzzer. Dar Tucker led Jordan with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and two assists, while Freddy Ibrahim added 19 points, one rebound, eight assists, and two steals for Jordan. Brownlee exploded for 41 points, 29 in the second half, 12 rebounds and three assists for Gilas. Both Gilas and Jordan have already qualified for the FIBA World Cup proper prior to the game. (PNA) }

EXPLOSIVE DEBUT. Myles Powell (11) scores 41 points while holding Cameron Krutwig to just 11 in their PBA debuts during the Blackwater-Bay Area Commissioner's Cup game on Wednesday (Sept. 21, 2022) at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. Bay Area, a guest team, dominated Blackwater, 137-88. (Photo courtesy of PBA Images) MANILA - Bay Area made a formal introduction to the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) with the same as how it dominated the competition during its tune-up games, zapping Blackwater, 133-87, to start the mid-season Commissioner's Cup on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. The Dragons, a guest team for the conference as they prepare for the upcoming East Asia Super League season, quickly shut down the Bossing en route to a 64-36 halftime, tying the largest halftime lead of this PBA year. The Hong Kong-based squad coached by Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Brian Goorjian never looked back from there as the club set the new league record for the most lopsided win by a guest team, PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon said. The 46-point win is also the 10th largest winning margin ever and the biggest since 2017. Myles Powell had a scintillating PBA debut with 41 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and one steal for Bay Area. Glen Yang added 22 points, five rebounds, seven assists, and one steal for the Dragons, who went 9-0 in their preseason games including 3-0 against the Ever Bilena franchise. Ato Ular continued where he left off from the Philippine Cup, leading Blackwater, which was handed its worst loss ever, with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Cameron Krutwig came close to a triple-double in his own PBA debut, putting up 11 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists with one block. Trevis Jackson put up eight markers, one board, one dime, and two swipes in his first game as a Bossing, while Gab Banal went scoreless in his first Blackwater game, although he had one rebound and three assists. Troy Rosario, the superstar Blackwater got from the three-team trade with NLEX and TNT earlier this week, sat out the conference opener. (PNA) }

Phoenix cripples Terrafirma for 1st win

MANILA-Phoenix smothered Terrafirma in the first half before sealing them off in the end for a 97-74 win on Friday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City. In the battle pitting the two remaining winless squads entering the day, the Fuel Masters stifled the Dyip in the first 24 minutes, holding them to just 24 points even as they started the third quarter on a 15-0 run to open the largest lead not just of the game but also of the season at 35, 59-24. Coach Topex Robinson, however, revealed that Perkins was playing with his morale not at 100 percent after finding out about something that happened in his family. "There's just an emergency in his family in the [United] States, and it happened before the game. He asked me if it's OK for him to leave right after the game because he's going through a lot right now. We just hope and pray that it will be OK," Robinson said. "Having that kind of guy who kinda gets everybody together," Robinson added. "His leadership is so important to us, so that's something we are excited about." Joseph Gabayni made 16 points, nine boards, four dimes, and one block off the bench for the Dyip, which crashed to the bottom of the standings at 0-3. (PNA) }

The outcome means the Blue Eagles, the defending champions, and the Fighting Maroons, seeking their first title since 1986, will meet one last time for all the marbles on Friday night at the same venue. Ateneo survived despite UP pulling off yet another second-half showcase to be just three minutes away from ending a long title drought. UP kept itself in the game after Zav Lucero scored on a layup and got a stop on the other end in the next play. But Ricci Rivero took some time before fishing a foul on Ange Kouame with only two seconds left. Rivero, who made his first free throw, intentionally missed the second charity in hopes of an offensive rebound, but Dave Ildefonso easily grabbed the defensive rebound to seal Ateneo's win. Kouame, who was formally named the season's Most Valuable Player earlier in the day, came close to a rare point-rebound-block triple-double with 14 points, 14 rebounds, and eight blocks to lead the Blue Eagles.
