priscilla, you've been talking to voters there. we just had a great clip we played of one you spoke with. talk to us a little about president trump's support there which seems to be such a shift from 2016. >> reporter: yeah, jen, certainly. and we've been crisscrossing this county talking to caucusgoers trying to get a sense of what's happened here. and what i'll say is of the folks i've talked to a lot of them have told me that they were undecided but leaning toward trump. and so it's perhaps not that super firm support we're seeing in some other areas but it's a number of issues that is driving it. some folks for them it is abortion and the fact that he sort of paved the way for overturning roe v. wade. but i've also heard about immigration. certainly about the economy. and also about holding government agencies accountable. but the one thing i've heard from folks across the board is they feel like they know donald trump, they know what they're getting with him, they know he's going to follow through and do what it is he said i was going
conservatives could solidify or slow his march to the republican nomination. . florida governor ron desantis has been furiously trying to peel away that support, questioning trump's commitment to the anti-abortion movement. >> for pro-life is reporting in iowa, donald trump is taking positions that are way different than what he professed to believe when he first ran for president in 2016. >> reporter: he is talking about trump's attack on florida's six-week abortion ban. >> i think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake. >> reporter: on this pastor charles hunley agrees with desantis. he too bristled when trump made those comments, but he is still planning to vote for the former president. >> if president trump was right here, i would let him know, sometimes your comments irritate all of us at one time or another. but this the end, it's note the way he does that, it's really what he says and/or in how he carries that out. he is a person of policy. >> reporter: in 2016, iowa's evangelicals made up nearly two-thirds of republican caucus attendees and helped lift ted
campaign, the republican field now up to 12 candidates. you don't need me to tell you that rachel but what is the talk within republican circles with the field already this large because we all know the size of the field was a dynamic that help donald trump leading up to 2016. >> reporter: exactly, david. many say such a crowded field back in 2016 helped donald trump emergency front runner in that race and that it could help him once again. some of those long shot candidates have a lot of work to do to close the gap or even make the debate stage periods >> david: rachel scott traveline country, live from iowa tonight. thank you. there's news in the special counsel investigation into former president trump. we have learned of another one of trump's closest confidant appearing before a grand jury. let's get right to abc's chief justice correspondent pierre thomas. pierre, who was questioned and we know anything about the line of questioning from federal prosecutors? >> reporter: a close ally of trump reluctantly appearing before a grand jury in miami as the special counsel's investigation into his handling of classified documents enters the final stretch. prosecutors calling taylor boot
in 2016. >> reporter: right. i appreciate the deference on the opinion, but i think there's two metric points. sean hannity during that town hall suggested to trump expressing concern among some republicans that his constant attacks on other republicans is alienating some part of the american electorate and is costing them elections. as soon as hannity began to asked donald trump why he makes those attacks, the crowd there at that town hall, which was filled with republican voters, started booing sean hannity. the second metric i'd use is, the fact that ron desantis and these other republicans have allowed over the last six years for trump to create the republican playing field of facts. one example from last night was the statement from donald trump to the iowa crowd that he gave farmers across the country $28 billion in payments during his
