some big news now that could impact your wallet, federal reserve chair jerome powell says they are no longer forecasting a recession. this comes as the u.s. central bank announced yet another interest rate hike, raising rates to a target range of 5 1/4 to 5 1/2%. that makes this the highest borrowing rate we have seen since 2001, and it also marks the 11th hike in the u.s. central bank's past 12 policy meetings. it's a little bit of a mixed bag on the news here. joining us is cnbc senior analyst, and commentators, and coe-ceo of contrast capital partners, and jeffrey wilfurs at the university of michigan. no longer forecasting a recession, that's significant news. >> i think it was a hedge statement, in the sense that powell said there's a path to a so called soft landing in which

funds rate unchanged at 5 to 5 1/4%. this after ten straight increases that started back in march of 2022 when rates were essentially 0. why are we seeing this pause? inflation is coming down. the economy is slowing. the banking turmoil, though, largely stabilized, still very fresh and the fed has hiked aggressively over the past year plus up until this point. rate hikes take time to settle into and impact the economy. central bankers here after that cpi print that we got yesterday showed the lowest pace of price increases in more than two years. after that, central bankers are feeling comfortable here to hit the pause button and basically assess the data and see whether they're going to have to raise rates again in the future. this is why investors are calling this a quote unquote, hawkish pause, or a skip. it's also why the fed is releasing its economic projections with this report on the heels of this meeting that just finished for the fed, and why that's being watched so

the headline cpi yesterday was a 6.1% decline in gasoline prices from the march reading. we already know this is old news. aaa already reported the average price of gasoline hit an all-time high this week. we're at new highs on gasoline. that means inflation is going to continue to creep up. we are not at peak. the consumer is feeling it because the producer price index leads the consumer price index. a couple components from yesterday's report. rent up 5 1/4%. air fares up 33% year-over-year in airline prices, fares, why? oil is going up. it all starts with gasoline and diesel and unfortunately joe biden is doubling down on his policies in terms of shutting down production. >> dana: if you look at biden's economic woes, the list is

years or 5 1/4 years or just another year quarter, should we ever believe a word donald trump has to say on this topic ever again? >> that's an easy answer. >> i know. >> the answer is no. i'll be honest with you, i never believed him at all when he said it. i mean, we heard what he said after meeting with the parkland survivors. we have had children killed in elementary schools and churches, on the streets, you name it. this president doesn't change. so that didn't surprise me that he flip-flopped, flipped and flopped again on the issue of guns. what i will say is that i have never seen another president who looks at an issue that's 90% or 9-10 people who believe you should have universal background checks and then says oh, no, the public is not ready for that. most people would actual tlak that football and run with it. but not this president. he's not to be trusted. he's not believed from one day to the next, not from one moment

bills, bill use agree on as hostages. that's why it won't happen until we have a different president. >> unbelievable. so let's talk about what a tax reform package should look like. what do you think would be best in terms of serving growth in the economy? >> sure. we should go to full expensing for all business investment rather than long depreciation schedules. it reduces capital, makes us more competitive. the corporate income tax rate needs to come from 35 highest in the world down to 25. when you add the state corporate income tax it makes us only average in competing with europe. but at least to 20% on the corporate side. we should move towards a single-rail tax on the individual side. the reason for that is a single rate tax, a flat tax is difficult to raise. i'm originally from massachusetts. in massachusetts liberal democrat in massachusetts, by constitution single-rate tax. it's 5 1/4.
