2 bettors bag P34.8-M Lotto jackpot

(Screengrab from PTV) MANILA - Two bettors became instant millionaires after winning the PHP34.8 million jackpot of the Lotto 6/42, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) said Friday. In an advisory, the PCSO said the bettors guessed the winning combination 09-10-42-08-13-41 from Thursday night's draw, with total prize money of PHP34,838,186. The winning tickets were bought by two bettors in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro and Tanay, Rizal. The bettor can claim the check at the PCSO main office in Mandaluyong City upon presentation of the winning ticket and two identification cards. Lotto winnings of over PHP10,000 shall be subject to a 20-percent tax under the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion law. A total of 88 won PHP24,000 each for guessing five out of the six winning digits; 3,286 will get PHP800 each for four correct digits, and 48,934 will settle for PHP20 each for three correct digits. Prizes not claimed within a year shall be forfeited. The 6/42 Lotto is drawn every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. This is the first time this month that a bettor bagged the jackpot prize of the government's lottery games. Meanwhile, the Grand Lotto 6/55 jackpot is estimated to climb up to a whopping PHP400 million by the next draw on Saturday night. PCSO said there was again no jackpot winner in the last Grandlotto 6/55draw last Wednesday which yielded a winning combination of 49-06-26-55-03-14 and which carried a jackpot of exactly PHP367,534,100. However, PCSO said 67 bettors came very close to hitting the jackpot, correctly guessing five of the six digit winning combination, and winning the second prize of PHP100,000. The Grand Lotto is drawn every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. The PCSO urged the public to patronize its games to generate more funds for health programs, medical assistance and services, and charities. Through its mandatory contributions, the agency said it does not only help individuals in need of medical assistance but also provides funds to government institutions. (PNA) }

Possible case uptick won't affect hospital utilization rate

MANILA - The number of Covid-19 cases may increase following the local transmission of Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1 but it would not affect the hospital utilization rate nationwide, an infectious diseases expert said Thursday. In a televised public briefing, Dr. Rontgene Solante, Vaccine Experts Panel member, said the subvariant would not affect the hospital utilization rate because it may not cause severe infection to the general population even if it is highly transmissible than the original Omicron variant. "I don't think it will affect... di gaya nung nakita natin sa Delta na nahirapan huminga, mataas ang mortality (unlike what we've seen with the Delta variant, there was difficulty in breathing, the mortality was high)," Solante said. "This [increase in cases] will occur especially in regions with low vaccination rate, siguro mas mahigitan pa natin ang 500 [average daily cases] na nakikita natin (we might get more than 500 average daily cases we've seen) before and that's what's were going to monitor," he added. Citing that the vulnerable population is mostly likely to get severe disease, Solante said health experts are monitoring and encouraging them to receive booster shots or to be vaccinated with the primary series of Covid-19 vaccines. As of May 18, Department of Health data show 103 new cases, bringing the total tally to 3,688,100. Meanwhile, a total of 68,838,393 individuals are now fully vaccinated and 13,732,500 have received their booster shots. (PNA) }

Nearly 90% of 67M ballots for May polls printed: Comelec

(Screengrab from Comelec Facebook live video) MANILA - Close to 90 percent or more than 58 million ballots for the May 9, national and local (NLE) polls have already been printed at the National Printing Office (NPO) in Quezon City, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) reported on Thursday. In a press briefing, Commissioner George Erwin Garcia said a total of 58,838,453 ballots representing 87.2 percent of the total number of ballots to be printed numbering 67,442,616, have already been printed. Of the 17 regions, the ballots for the National Capital Region (NCR) and Region 4-A except Quezon Province have not been completed. As of 8 a.m. Thursday, only 671,154 or 9.17 percent have been printed of the 7,322,361 total ballots needed to be printed in NCR while there are 5,816,117 or 74.86 percent already printed out of the total 7,769,073 total ballots for Calabarzon. Garcia said a total of 105,853 ballots needed to be reprinted after being found defective. On the other hand, the Comelec official reminded the public that only poll body personnel are authorized to distribute the voter information sheets (VIS). He said the VIS will be distributed before Election Day. The VIS shall include the voter's name, address, the precinct and the place where he is registered, and simplified instructions as to the casting of votes. "Do not be surprised if somebody knocks on your doors and provides you with VIS. We've already printed the VIS for the entire country and are now ready for distribution," Garcia said. Meanwhile, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said they will be releasing specific markings to determine the authenticity of the VIS being distributed. "We will come out with information on what are the markings that will determine if what you got is original and authentic VIS," he added. Republic Act 7904 states that the poll body must provide all registered voters, through registered mail, with a voter information sheet at least 30 days before an election. (PNA) }
