PDP-Laban senatorial bets give reservations on 'Alert Level 0'

(File photo) MANILA - At least two senatorial candidates of the ruling party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino - Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) have expressed reservations about the proposed "Alert Level 0" in the country. Senatorial aspirants John Castriciones and Rey Langit said the de-escalation of alert level status should not be done in haste, stressing that the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) still prevails. Langit, a veteran broadcaster, said the proposed shift to Alert Level 0 status can be done, once more Filipinos get inoculated against Covid-19. "Kahit po bumababa na ang mga kaso ng Covid, delikado pa rin po dahil hindi pa tapos ang pandemya at maaaring may bagong variant na sumulpot (Even if the Covid-19 cases continue to drop, it is still dangerous because there is still a pandemic and a threat of new variants)," Langit said in a statement. "Kung nais po nating maideklara ang Alert Level 0, dapat lang po na mas marami pa sa ating mga kababayan ang mabakunahan (If we want to shift to Alert Level 0, it's a prerogative that many of our citizens are already vaccinated)." As of March 16, a total of 139,454,246 Covid-19 doses have been administered nationwide. Around 64,838,213 Filipinos are now fully-vaccinated, National Task Force Against Covid-19 chief implementer and vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said in a meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte at Malacanan Palace on Tuesday night. Galvez added that the vaccination for the pediatric sector also continues to gain momentum, noting that nearly 11 million individuals aged five to 17 have already received the first vaccine shot. Despite the government's efforts to ramp up the Covid-19 vaccination drive, Langit lamented that many Filipinos are still unvaccinated. "Nakakalungkot po na marami po sa ating kababayan ang hindi pa bakunado dahil maraming nasasayang na bakuna. Nakakapanghinayang ang mga bakuna na mag-eexpire lang (I am saddened that many of our fellow citizens are still unvaccinated, this has led to the spoilage of the vaccines. It is regrettable that we just let unused vaccines expire)," Galvez said. Meanwhile, Castriciones said the country's fight against Covid-19 would only be a success if a total of 90 million Filipinos get vaccinated against the dreaded disease. He also reminded the public to continue observing the minimum public health standards despite the continued drop in Covid-19 infections. "Even if you get the booster, you still need to wear face mask and follow the health protocol so that we will be protected against the infection," Castriciones said. "Marami sa ating mga kababayan na bakunado na ay nagiging complacent na dahil sa pagbaba ng mga kaso ng Covid-19, kinakailangan pa rin na sundin ang mga health protocols para sa kaligtasan ng lahat (Many of us who have been vaccinated are now becoming complacent, because of the lower number of Covid-19 cases being reported each day. But we still need to strictly follow the health protocols for us to survive)" he added. As of February 2022, the Philippines ranked third in the vaccination administration among the 10 Southeast nations, 11th out of 47 Asian countries, and 18th out of 205 countries worldwide. Castriciones and Langit called for closer cooperation between the local and national governments, as well as for an intensified information campaign, to encourage more people to get inoculated against the coronavirus. Langit also told vaccine-hesitant Filipinos to trust the medical professionals. "Marami po sa ating mga health worker ang kumakayod para himukin tayo na magpabakuna. Maniwala po tayo sa kanila, maniwala tayo sa eksperto, maniwala tayo sa siyensya (Many of our health workers are striving hard just to encourage us to be vaccinated. We should believe in them. We should trust the experts and the science behind the vaccines)," Langit said. On Wednesday, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the further easing of Covid-19 restrictions would only be done, once all parts of the country are placed under the most lenient Alert Level 1. Vergeire also clarified that Alert Level 0 is not an "official term" yet. Metro Manila and 47 other areas have been placed under Alert Level 1 for the second half of March. (PNA) }

15 regions hit at least 60% vaccination coverage

(File photo) MANILA - Only two out of 17 regions need to work double-time to hit at least 60 percent of their target population in the Covid-19 vaccination program. Soccsksargen and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao have full vaccination coverage of 56.06 percent and 25.95 percent, respectively, according to data shared Friday by the National Task Force Against Covid-19. Nine regions have already fully vaccinated at least 70 percent of their target, one year since the inoculation drive began in March last year -- Metro Manila, the Cordillera Administrative Region, the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, and Western Visayas. The regions of Mimaropa, Bicol, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao and Caraga, have completed the Covid-19 primary series of 60 percent of their target population. The Philippines has already administered more than 139.5 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine nationwide, with 64,838,213 Filipinos completing their primary doses, including those who received the single-shot Janssen and Sputnik Light jabs. Of the fully vaccinated, 11.3 million have booster or additional doses. (PNA) }

64.8M now fully vaxxed, 11M get booster shots vs. Covid-19

(PNA file photo) MANILA - The Philippines has already administered a total of 139,454,246 doses of Covid-19 vaccine nationwide, with 64,838,213 Filipinos having completed their primary doses and 11,291,687 of them have received booster shots against the virus, as of Thursday. Based on the latest data from the National Task Force (NTF) Against Covid-19, more than 10 million under the 5-11 age bracket got their first coronavirus shots, with 381,433 kids were fully vaccinated and more than 9.7 million under 12 to 17 age group, have completed their two primary series. The NTF expects the number to increase in the coming days, following the approval of the country's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the use of Sinovac jabs to minors. Pending the release of the final guidelines from the Department of Health and the Health Technology Assessment Council, the Sinovac can be administered to pediatric age groups 6 to 17 years old, according to the NTF. NTF chief and vaccine czar, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., earlier said there is still a need to encourage fully vaccinated to avail of the Covid-19 booster shots "in order to build an additional layer of protection against the virus." "We have to highly encourage our government workers and economic front-liners to get their booster shots. Second, mag-provide dapat tayo ng (we should provide) possible incentives for people with boosters," Galvez said in a news release late Wednesday. Galvez added the government also recommends the administration of booster shots as the country is gearing towards total economic recovery. He added some of the business sectors have suggested requiring booster shots in travels and entering establishments. The National Vaccination Operations Center earlier noted that the low turnout of booster shots coverage is due to vaccine complacency of the public-thinking that the two primary doses are enough protection against the dreaded virus. (PNA photo by Avito C. Dalan) MANILA - A total of 57,494,154 doses of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine have been administered nationwide since the rollout began in March, the Department of Health (DOH) said Thursday. In an online media briefing, Health Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje said healthcare workers and senior citizen registered a "high" total numbers of fully vaccinated because of the one-shot Janssen vaccine. "Ang 57.4 million jabs na ito ay (These 57.4 million jabs are) broken down to 31,015,216 first doses and 26,479,028 second doses," Cabotaje said. Although the number of fully vaccinated senior citizens are high, Cabotaje said there is a need to vaccinate more of the older population and the A5 category or the indigents. For the individuals with comorbidities, about 80.01 percent or 7,219,174 of the target 9,023,070 population are fully-vaccinated. For the frontline personnel in essential sector, about 31.44 percent or 28,300,410 target individuals have received their second jab. Meantime 2,838,535 or 21.99 percent of the 12,911,193 poor people are now fully-vaccinated. "Nagumpisa na rin po tayo ng (We have started with the) rest of the adult population, 18 and above, 1,165,171 first dose and 323,412 two doses," Cabotaje said. She added that for the pediatric vaccination of those with comorbidities, a total of 23,727 minors have received their life-saving shots as of October 27. The national government is keeping its goal to achieve population protection before this year ends, raising the initial target of 70 percent or 77 million eligible population to 80 to 90 percent or about 88 million. As of October 28 noon, the Philippineshas a total of 99,551,290 vaccine doses.(PNA) }
