St Abbs | Berwickshire | beaches | lighthouse

Fishing boats in the harbour at St Abbs
Located a few miles north-west of the fishing town of Eyemouth, the picturesque Berwickshire village of St Abbs is named for Æbbe, daughter of Æthelfrith, ruler in the late 6th century of what was then the Ango-Saxon kingdom of Bernicia.
Her brother, Oswald, would later unite Bernicia and Deira into the kingdom of Northumbria and like him Æbbe was a devout Christian. She founded a monastery at Kirk Hill, just to the north of St Abbs on the promontory now known as St Abbs Head. That monastery later moved two miles inland to become Coldingham Priory in the 11th century and is still in use as a church, though the oldest surviving parts date from the 13th century.

A little movie trip around Berwickshire Coast film locations

With local resident, Alan Dearling
Firstly, a hands-up. I’ve not been able to access viewings of all these films and TV programmes. And in a few cases, I don’t want to! But, it has still been interesting to try and piece together this collection – all of which include at least momentary glimpses of the Scottish/English border coastal areas, from Berwick-upon-Tweed in England to St Abbs in Scotland. It’s been fun and interesting talking to lots of locals in order to put the article together.

The Witch’s Daughter is a children’s novel by Nina Bawden. It was first published in 1966. It has been dramatised for television twice, firstly with Fiona Kennedy as Perdita (1971) in a four (or possibly five) part BBC mini-series. It was an early example of ‘fantasy’ filming by the BBC. Scenes were filmed in various locations around St Abbs, based on a TV script written by Alistair Bell.

20 pictures of Scotland's scenery and wildlife taken by late Watford Observer manager

'Appreciate most will notice how rich the colours of the Highland Cow are but it was the sun on the mountain that struck me'
These incredible pictures showcasing the spectacular scenery and array of wildlife in Scotland were captured by a talented photographer and late Watford Observer advertising manager.
Jamie Gilmore, who died in November at the age of 50, worked for this newspaper’s parent company Newsquest from August 1998 to February 2004 before moving to Scotland five years later. This gave him the perfect setting to utilise his gift to the maximum.
Jamie’s friends on Facebook have been able to enjoy his photographs for several years and we can share a selection of his work with you with the kind permission of his sister Sam, who has selected 20 of her late brother's favourite pictures.
