Houston, Texas -- The Taste of Texas has been a Houston icon since 1977.
Nina and Edd Hendee opened the first location with a menu that looked much different than the one you see today, with options including nachos and chili.
But the legendary steak house soon took shape in the Memorial area, and has grown into one of the largest independent restaurants in the country serving Certified Angus Beef.
The Hendees credit their success to the top-of-the-line food they serve, and the people serving it. They have employed thousands of people over the years, with several second generation servers now working at the restaurant.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- PepperLou Gifts started as a dream by Valerie Cassady and her daughter Ellie.
They always wanted to open their own store, but it wasn't until Valerie needed a space for her interior decorating business, that PepperLou Gifts was born.
Valerie wanted to open the Memorial-area store to give Ellie a better future after she graduated high school. Valerie said, "As a young adult with special needs, there aren't a lot of programs out there to make them feel a part of something big. And so we started PepperLou for Ellie."

LAKE JACKSON, Texas (KTRK) -- Lake Jackson has the feel of a small town, but the "City of Enchantment" has the history of a big city.
It was started in the 1940s when Alden B. Dow designed the city from the ground up. Dow bought the Abner Jackson Plantation land as a place for its workers to live.
Alden B. Dow then designed many of the homes in the area, along with several churches.
Lake Jackson is also home to Selena, and her time there is part of the exhibits at the Lake Jackson Historical Museum.

Houston, Texas -- Raja Sweets was the first Indian restaurant in Houston when it first opened its doors in 1986. Now, it's the longest-running Indian restaurant in Texas!
The Gahunia family started Raja Sweets in 1986 after immigrating to Houston and realizing there weren't many places to find authentic Indian cuisine.
At Raja Sweets, everything is made from scratch daily, from the soft and spongy rasgulla to the crisp and juicy jalebi.
You'll find almost 50 different types of sweets offered daily.
"I would describe Raja Sweets as a walk through India," said Sharan Gahunia, second-generation owner. "You can get North Indian food, you can get sweets from South India, everything is so rich, it's so flavorful."
