While case numbers dipped into the single digits over the weekend, by Tuesday they climbed back up into the double figures.
Ketchikan’s pandemic risk level remains “very high,” and that’s not likely to change any time soon. According to state data, the southern panhandle including Ketchikan, Metlakatla and Prince of Wales Island has the highest population-adjusted rate of new cases in the state. New infections are appearing at a rate three times higher than any other region in Alaska. ....

(Image: National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) Ketchikan emergency officials say they’re reckoning with at least 10 COVID-19 infections in the past week that are suspected to be cases of community spread. Ketchikan’s head of pandemic response, Abner Hoage, told reporters Friday that officials are concerned by the acceleration of infections. As of Friday, officials have reported 61 cases in the past week with 67 active cases of COVID-19. “This is arguably the largest outbreak of COVID-19 that we’ve had in Ketchikan since the beginning of the pandemic,” Hoage said. “We have at least three active clusters currently.” ....
City of Ketchikan Mayor Bob Sivertsen was absent, with Vice Mayor Dave Kiffer presiding. The council in its June 20, 2019 meeting approved the expenditure of the $20,000 for the program, but it was set aside when the COVID-19 challenges arrived and the money was not spent. The borough, according to information from Borough Planning Director Richard Harney, has approved $80,000 to support the project. Harney explained the aim of the project during Thursday s meeting. âIn order for us to be sustainable moving into the future, to try to get our community to be more resilient, we talked about this tourism strategy a few years ago, before the pandemic hit,â he said. ....
