April 17 (UPI) -- The first typhoon of 2021 has formed in the western Pacific Basin as "Surigae" underwent rapid intensification over the Philippine Sea, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center said Saturday.
By late Saturday afternoon, local time, Surigae had intensified to 10-minute average sustained wind speeds of 115 mph and was located about 325 nautical miles east of Legazpi, Philippines. It was moving northwest at about 12 mph.

With this level of strengthening, the Surigae became the first tropical system of the year to reach super typhoon status, the JTWC said.

A newly formed tropical system has brought the western Pacific back to life, and AccuWeather meteorologists say as the storm strengthens, it could develop into a powerful typhoon -- the basin's first since last year.
Tropical Storm Surigae formed across the Philippine Sea Wednesday while churning midway between Guam and the Philippines. Current forecasts indicated that it is possible that the storm could reach typhoon status as it approaches the Philippines in the coming days.

Tropical Cyclone Eloise has made landfall just south of Beira, Mozambique, in the pre-dawn hours Saturday morning, local time. The storm will continue to press inland over the weekend, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds to Mozambique, Zimbabwe and northern South Africa.
On Friday, local time, Eloise strengthened into a severe tropical storm over the Mozambique Channel. On the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, this is equivalent to a Category 1 hurricane.

A cold front sweeping across Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southeastern Brazil can spark strong thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday leading to flash flooding and locally damaging wind gusts.
The threat is first expected to develop on Monday when these storms can stretch from Uruguay into Entre Rios, Santa Fe and northern Cordoba.
While a few showers and a thunderstorm are expected in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, the threat of the heaviest storms is expected to be to the north and west of these cities.

The first tropical cyclone of the season is brewing across the South Pacific, and it can bring impacts to Fiji and Vanuatu through early next week.
The low began developing near American Samoa earlier this week and has since drifted to the west and developed into a tropical depression on Friday while to the north of Fiji. This strengthening low can merge with a separate tropical disturbance and become a cyclone over the weekend.
If it becomes a tropical cyclone, it will be called Yasa.
"Conditions look very favorable for this low to become Tropical Cyclone Yasa," said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Jason Nicholls.
