In the past academic year, Associated Student Government passed key legislation that pertains to a variety of issues facing the Northwestern community. ASG sought to address documented claims of racism within the Senate, which resulted in the resignation of both the speaker of the house and faculty advisor. Notably, senators voted on legislation aimed at making the organization as well as the campus more inclusive of students with marginalized identities. Internally, ASG implemented changes in Senate seats and the executive board. Members also worked on legislation to create a better community space for the campus LGBTQ+ community. Former Rainbow Alliance Senator Jo Scaletty said they think the organization has made tangible progress. ....
Associated Student Government appointed Weinberg junior Margot Bartol as newly created executive officer of accountability in its Wednesday session. ASG president Christian Wade and vice president Adaeze Ogbona created the position to hold the entire organization and University administration accountable to the student body. Accountability was a central part of Wade and Ogbonna’s campaign platform. They approached Barol with the position after prior conversations around their platform. “In the past, ASG has had a big problem of making all these promises or trying to do things, but never really following through on it,” Wade said. The voting period will start Thursday and end Saturday. Vergara Miranda is leader of Alianza, NU’s Latinx Student Alliance, and Advancement for the Undocumented Community at NU. She also works on ASG’s finance committee and was a senator as a freshman. Rodriguez, ASG’s current executive officer of justice and inclusion, has worked with Vergara Miranda at Alianza. Vergara Miranda said they share similar backgrounds, which helped shape their campaign platforms. ....
Associated Student Government senators campaigned for vacancies on the Rules Committee in the organization’s Wednesday session, hoping to use the committee to make student government more equitable. The Rules Committee works as the judicial branch of ASG, ensuring legislation aligns with ASG code and reviewing and updating the code if necessary. While these changes are usually small, the committee has the power to do more, Elizabeth Sperti, Weinberg junior and chief of staff, said. “The rules committee can be a really great place to (make significant changes to ASG),” she said. ASG elected For Members Only Senator Jason Hegelmeyer, Medill Senator Julia Karten and Hillel Senator Dalia Segal-Miller to fill vacant seats on the Rules Committee. All three senators said they want to make a larger impact on ASG. ....
