The Associated Student Government presidential election is entering the campaigning phase, and this year’s election is like no other. After a two-week delay in the election cycle and multiple slates dropping out of the race, Northwestern students will have the chance to vote for one of two tickets this weekend. SESP junior Christian Wade and Medill sophomore Adaeze Ogbonna, running for president and vice president, respectively, will face off against McCormick and Communication sophomore Sahibzada Mayed and Bienen and Communication sophomore McKenna Troy. But the two slates currently on the ballot didn’t enter the race until after the election was initially supposed to happen. ....
Associated Student Government presidential slate Teresa Vergara Miranda and Daniel Rodriguez dropped out of the uncontested 2021 executive election cycle Monday. ASG Election Commissioner Donovan Cusick said he received notice Monday afternoon from Vergara Miranda. The decision to end their campaign comes after unprecedented changes to the election cycle timeline. On April 15, an emergency ASG session resulted in a Senate vote delaying the election period by two weeks and accepting new candidates until this Friday. The Senate also passed an amendment allowing candidates to ask for signatures through private and group messages, which Cusick said at the time was an opportunity to expand outreach to the student body. ....

Associated Student Government presidential and vice presidential candidates Teresa Vergara Miranda and Daniel Rodriguez discussed University Police abolition, Greek Life and equity at a Wednesday town hall hosted by For Members Only. The election town hall was moderated by FMO Senator Jason Hegelmeyer and Election Commissioner Donovan Cusick. Students submitted questions ahead of time. Even though this year’s ASG election is uncontested, Cusick said the town hall was intended to give candidates an opportunity to communicate platforms. “We still want to encourage the Northwestern community and students to get involved, to go out and vote and to interact with the campaign,” Cusick said. ....
In the second virtual election cycle in Associated Student Government history, SESP juniors Teresa Vergara Miranda and Daniel Rodriguez are running uncontested for president and vice president, respectively. Later this week, the campaign will release their platform and participate in a town hall co-hosted by For Members Only, Northwestern’s Black Student Alliance. The voting period will start Thursday and end Saturday. Vergara Miranda is leader of Alianza, NU’s Latinx Student Alliance, and Advancement for the Undocumented Community at NU. She also works on ASG’s finance committee and was a senator as a freshman. Rodriguez, ASG’s current executive officer of justice and inclusion, has worked with Vergara Miranda at Alianza. Vergara Miranda said they share similar backgrounds, which helped shape their campaign platforms. ....
