'Culture Crash' Episode 3: Comic Book Characters And The Symbolism Of Captain America


In early January, pop culture and politics collided in an unsavory way for Neal Kirby. He is the son of the illustrator Jack Kirby, who along with his artistic partner Joe Simon, created the Captain America comics in 1941. Director of Flying Carpet Theatre Adam Koplan joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes for the third installment of the “Culture Crash” series.
Interview Highlights:
“The creator of Captain America was born Jacob Kurtzberg and was born of Austrian-Jewish descent. He lived in poverty in New York City, on the Lower Eastside. By the time he was fourteen, he needed to fend for himself in terms of making money and he started drawing. He was inspired by the newspaper-style cartoons and he started making cartoons, which led into a certain kind of art. And before long, he was hired by a comic book company. 'Culture Crash' Episode 2: The Various Influences On American Patriotic Music


With the recent election, inauguration and now Presidents Day, our second episode of “Culture Crash” looks at patriotic songs.
Flying Carpet Theatre artistic director Adam Koplan joined “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes and talked about the origins of American patriotic music.
“You know, as we look at the songs we’re listening to, I think, in some way, they all reflect this melting pot that is America and the culture crash that we’re talking about,” Koplan said.
