Applications of Robust & Optimal Control Systems in Power Systems

Over the last few decades, there has been an increase in power grid blackouts globally. In July 2012, over 700 million people in India were affected by grid blackout; 20 of the 28 Indian states suffered the power outage and this blackout was one of the world’s worst grid outages. Such power grid blackouts have been reported in Brazil (1999), in the USA and Canada (August 2003), in Russia (2005), and many more places. To avoid such power grid blackouts, the load frequency is desired to be constant and any deviation in the frequency will impact the power system’s operation.Power system networks are highly uncertain systems because of the fluctuation in the generation uncertainty in the renewable resources in smart grids. Also the active and reactive power requirement is never constant because of continually varying consumer and industrial load. Hence, additional controls need to be deployed to regulate the frequency and maintain the voltage. Any significant deviations in frequency or ....
