Indonesia calls for maximising benefit of digitalisation for faster economic recovery

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (Bernama): Indonesia has called on its Asean (Association of South-East Asian Nations) partners to maximise the benefit of digitalisation to foster faster economic recovery and in overcoming the Covid-19 pandemic.
Indonesian Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate said efforts should also be made to help the most vulnerable in order to ensure that no one will be left behind.
"The Covid-19 pandemic has sparked a momentum to accelerate the digitalisation in many parts of the world, including Indonesia and Asean.
"As the President Joko Widodo has mandated, Indonesia has taken steps to maximise its digital potential through digital transformation initiatives in strategic sectors, namely infrastructure development, technology adoption, digital talent improvement, and the creation of fundamental regulation,” he said in his intervention at the plenary session of the inaugural ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting (ADGMIN1) recently.

Asean needs new cybersecurity laws to combat transboundary crimes online, says Muhyiddin

KUALA LUMPUR: Asean needs new laws to tackle transboundary cyber threats to develop the region into a digital economic bloc, says Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
"I believe there are areas under the present laws which need to be reviewed to accommodate new technologies and challenges, especially in the parameters of security in cyberspace.
"Technology has evolved at a rapid pace and so does the emergence of new cyber threats and new challenges," he said in his keynote address at the opening of the inaugural Asean Digital Ministers Meeting (ADGMIN1) held here on Thursday (Jan 21).
He said that bringing transboundary cybercriminals to justice requires a coordinated and integrated regional approach.

He said Asean members have a good vision and a good number of online population besides a fairly developed Information Technology (IT) infrastructure to accelerate the growth of the digital economy.
"The COVID-19 pandemic has further reinforced the importance of digitalisation to the life of the people, (and) to the socio-economic or even security of any country,” he told Bernama in an email interview in conjunction with the inaugural Asean Digital Ministers’ Meeting (ADGMIN1) and related meetings from Jan 18-22, hosted by Malaysia and to be held via videoconference.
