"I Was Hungry…"

“I Was Hungry…”
January 20, 2021
This article is written with combined information from Karyl Kramer, one of the faculty sponsors from Upper Columbia Academy, and Jan Latsha, the director of Maasai Development Project which sponsors a number of lay pastors as well as the educational center, a rescue home for girls fleeing female genital mutilation and early marriage. Jan narrates the article.
I waited at the airport in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, in March 2017, for our new mission group from Upper Columbia Academy in Washington State to arrive. These groups from various schools or other organizations always interested me. I love watching the teenagers learn how people in other parts of the world live. Their hearts open to the girls at Maasai Development Project Educational Centre. It is fun to see new friendships blossom. ....

The Fear of the Lord is the Foundation of Wisdom

The Fear of the Lord is the Foundation of Wisdom

Isaiah is the book containing the oracles of Isaiah, the son of Amoz, who was called by God in the year in which king Uzziah died (Is. 6:1; 740 BC) and those given by his disciples during and after the Babylonian exile, possibly as late as 520 BC As Prof. Roy Gane, the principal contributor of this quarter’s SS lessons, points out, there is a gap of 150 years between the historical references in Chapters 1 to 39 and Chapters 40 to 66 (Lesson 8, p.161; While pointing out the length of time covered by the circumstances of the various oracles, he does not draw the logical conclusion to this fact). Besides the length of time in which the oracles were at home, it must also be noticed that the text has several problematic sequences and interruptions. For example, the appearance of Leviathan, the fleeing, twisting serpent and the dragon of the sea (Is. 27:1) is a distraction, and the announcemen ....

Adventist Faces of COVID-19

Adventist Faces of COVID-19
January 19, 2021
Over the past year, as the reality of COVID-19 has unfolded, it is startling to realize that some 95.6 million people have contracted the disease of whom 2.04 million have died. In the United States alone there have been 24.1 million cases with over 399,000 deaths.[1]
At first it didn’t seem that serious. Our kids enjoyed having an extra-long Spring Break. It became more real as people who we personally knew got sick, and a few even died. Other friends lost their jobs. As the pandemic has raged on, those who have pre-existing health conditions or who are elderly have been the most vulnerable. As scientists come to better understand the disease, we have come to learn how simple practices like wearing masks (over your mouth and nose) and practicing social distancing can help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. If we take seriously the biblical teaching to “love our neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:31), it should move our hearts ....

Blackface, Cultural Lies, and Ellen G. White — Or, What Is Present Truth?

Blackface, Cultural Lies, and Ellen G. White Or, What Is Present Truth?
Written by:
January 19, 2021
On July 4, 1912, eighty-three-year-old Ellen G. White celebrated, with dozens of Adventists, land purchased for the St. Helena Sanitarium in Northern California. In the early years of the twentieth century, Adventists considered sanitariums one of the most influential organizations in promoting the present truth, stated inversely as combating the culture s lies. They believed commonly held cultural lies spread pain, destruction, and ruin on the population. With sanitariums, Adventists counterattacked the scattering of lies, primarily lies woven around nutrition and healthful living. With White s help, three sanitariums, Paradise Valley, Glendale, and Loma Linda, mushroomed in Southern California in the previous decade. In Angwin, California, the Adventist family took a day off to relax and unwind. White participated in the flag-raising ceremony, several patriotic ....

North American Division President Reflects on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

North American Division President Reflects on Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Written by:
I ask you the question: Has the dream been realized?
As we draw to the end of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations of 2021 and reflect on the state of things in the United States, North America, and our world, one can’t help but be perplexed by the paradox of our times.
In one of Dr. King’s most famous speeches he said,  I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Some want to say that we have arrived at that place, but have we really? ....
