In an effort to keep students safe, schools across the Commonwealth are receiving part of a $12 million grant meant to improve school security.

City council recently passed Hampton’s five-year budget, and it’s a big one—$332 million. It’ll be used to tackle improvement projects between now and 2028.

Launched in January, it’s a partnership between the city and the school division and is free to each of the more than 1,300 public-school second graders. “To watch the kids progress from the first lesson to the fifth lesson, it’s remarkable.”

Several schools across Hampton Roads are getting security equipment upgrades through the Virginia Department of Education's School Security Equipment grants. These awards can be used for surveillance equipment, mass notification systems, cameras for buses and more.

The Virginia Department of Education is distributing funds especially to schools with frequent problems, to be used for mass notification systems, security card access systems and surveillance for schools and buses.
