going out to eat is about to get more expensive. alison is on the floor of the new york stock exchange with details. let's start with mcdonald's. how much are we talking about? >> reporter: well right now mcdonald's is not saying when it's going to raise prices on its menu items. we'll see price increases on the menu this year. now, keep in mind that this is going to be an across the menu hike in prices. mcdonalds is going to go in there and raise prices on only select items. it's kind of a balancing act because if you think about it, people go there to get a low-price meal and rule number one in the fast food biz, you don't want to scare away the consumers with high prices at your restaurant, carol. >> i know. but what is behind the increase, then? it's not like the economy is getting increasely better? >> it is getting better but

analysts tell us, you know, the market doesn't always move in a straight line and a retreat is not really such a bad thing. it becomes a buying opportunity for a lot of investors. what is really weighing on the markets today, earnings from johnson & johnson and 3 m, they are down 2%. we also got a downbeat housing report. monthly home prices fell 1%, which is also weighing on sentiment. investors here on the floor are definitely awaiting the state of the union address today and are hoping to see some business-friendly policies coming out of that. carol? >> all right. alison, many thanks. chicago is bears town but is the office is place to send a message to green bay fans? john was fired for wearing his packer's tie to work on monday. it was just one day after a bitter playoff lost to the most hated rivals. who here's how it played out. >> he says, take your tie off or you're fired. i'm like, oh, i'm sorry.

mandated yet. congress is expected to look into this issue later this year. brooke? >> 30 seconds, alison. what's going on at the u.s. postal service? we've been talking about major, major closings. >> reporter: yeah. i mean, the plan is to shut down 2,000 stations and branches in rural areas. more like retail stores. no mail processing at these stations and sometimes there's not mail carriers. no actual post offices will close, but they are going back and cutting back because mail volume is down and it's really the main source of revenue for the usps. it was hit hard by the recession, and, of course, we're all doing our mail electronically. the post office lost $8.5 billion last year, so they have to do away with these thousands of postal locations to make up for that -- make up that ground. brooke? >> thank you. last here on our repo"repor roulette," maybe it's a weekly thing. piers morgan. why do you get the music? your official music. >> love your dancing to my theme

9th status hearing. we do expect the federal government to add a couple more charges. those murder charges at that point, and that march 9th court date will be held in tucson. the defense said they had no problems moving the proceedings from here in phoenix to tucson for the rest of the proceedings against loughner. of course, the government wanted to do that so that they could be closer to the crime and, therefore, the victims' families. >> of course, phoenix several hours away. ted rowlands in phoenix. thank you, ted. next is allison kosik live in new york. alison, fire fox, apparently, is trying to use ts do not track feature on its web browser, so what toss that mean? does that mean companies won't be able to track us online? >> reporter: not necessarily. so here's the deal with this. the do not track feature will be available soon on fire fox, but here's the catch. it's not an automatic thing, brooke. you have to opt in and tracking companies actually have to agree not to monitor what you're doing online. guess what, not one company has agreed to do that yet, so it's probably because it's not

drama. >> yeah. i mean, he founded the company back in 1976. he was dismissed in what was basically, you know, a board room coup in 1985, only to return to apple in 1997, but jobs is really the guy who is credited for reviving what was really a struggling computer-maker. he's considered a true visionary. i mean, think about it. on his watch he created the mac desktop computer, the ipod, iphone, mostecently the ipad. "fortune" even put him saying the decade, the past decade, the business basically belongs to jobs. so this could be a big hit for apple, though once again its shares didn't take a hit in his absence before. we'll have a better idea tomorrow when markets open. it is interesting that this announcement came today with u.s. markets closed. brooke, it's given investors some time to process the information. >> alison, we'll check back to see how the numbers respond. thank you. >> okay. >> coming up next, you may know him from tlc's "say yes to the dress." monty durham. hey, monty. he is here to tell us about the

the charity tournament being recorded today will air next month. that's when you can see it. old school paper checks are quickly becoming a thing of the past. the latest example, the government is offering to give some americans their tax refund on a prepaid debit card. alison has the details. how does this work, alison? >> reporter: well, what this is, carol, it's a test program for low-income americans only. i'm talking about people who make less than $35,000 a year. and what this would do is give their tax refund, actually direct deposit them on to a prepaid debit card. the government is going to go ahead and send out letters next week to 600,000 people who would be eligible. it will tell them how to activate this card if they choose to do so and the low-income americans are targeted because they most likely would not have a bank account in the first place. the debit card may have fees but it could be worth it because

our eyes are on jpmorgan chase. the fourth quarter earnings were a whopping $4.8 billion, up almost 50%. analysts say it's a good sign that bank earnings next week will be strong. we're going to hear from some of the biggies, like bank of america, citigroup, and wells fargo. carol? >> thank you very much, alison. >> sure. the suggestion for a new seating plan at the state of the union address is catching on. we'll tell you who is in favor of the democrats and the republicans sitting together. but, first, a university of colorado study of almost 700 bloggers suggest the words they used most often are a pretty good indicator of personality. among extra ex troe verts, wonderful, together, morning, and spring. just ahead, we'll run down the words used most often by conscientious and neurotic bloggers.

11,755. alison kosik live for us at the new york stock exchange, and alison, could it be many americans getting raises this year? >> reporter: yeah. you know, it looks like those companies that you work for are going to show you a little more love in 2011. there were some surveys done showing that as more companies turn a profit again, many plan to give their employees a raise in 2011. so about 98% of those companies that were surveyed said they plan to increase your base pay but not sure you're going to be wowed by the difference in the amount you're going to be taking home. the average increase is expected to only be about 2.8%. that's a little more than last year. so if you're a typical worker making about $50,000, 500 bucks a year, comes to about $38 per paycheck. so not much, but, hey, it's enough to maybe grab a couple of jugs of milk or go to a dinner or lunch, right? >> every little bit helps. and story number two, my colleague ali velshi called him
