Lake Michigamme in the Upper Peninsula, which is mostly in Marquette County with public access at Van Riper State Park, is one of Michigan’s largest lakes. It covers nearly 5,000 acres.
The search for Michigan’s Best Inland Lake is well underway, with over 140 different Michigan lakes nominated, and voting is open until Friday May 21 at midnight for our 9 regional polls.
The votes are rolling in for Michigan’s Best Inland Lake, we’ve gotten several thousand of them from our MLive readers. Some polls already have a clear frontrunner, like Clark Lake in the Jackson poll which has a big lead over the other area lakes, and Gull Lake in Richland which, as of now, has a lock on the Kalamazoo/Southwest Michigan poll. Other polls are very close, and your votes will determine who will end up on top. In the Ann Arbor region, Pinckney Lake is battling it out with Whitmore Lake, with a close third by Silver Lake. Beautiful Torch Lake is in a close race with popular Higgins Lake, and in the Flint poll it’s a battle of the lakes of Fenton, with Fenton Lake, Silver Lake and Lake Ponemah all in close competition.

BRATTLEBORO — Amelia Shillingford grew up outside of Boston, but in her heart she’s always been a Vermonter.
“Vermont is about sense of purpose. It’s about community and connection and nature and simplicity of life,” said Shillingford, who has lived in Vermont since 2011 and has worked at the Brattleboro Retreat since 2016. “I’ve always been connected to Vermont and its values.”
Shillingford spent summers in Vermont, at Aloha Camp, a girls camp, in Fairlee, where she experienced all of those things.
“I was loved and valued, not for how smart I was, just for who I was,” she said.
