Additional help is on the way for Otero County businesses struggling through the COVID-19 pandemic, as a new avenue to request that help opened Monday.
Otero County Economic Development Coordinator Danelle Berg said at the board of county commissioners meeting that a new COVID-19 relief grant program s application period just opened and that she is taking calls.
The grant is for businesses making less than $2.5 million in revenue annually. The bill provides $37 million in direct aid grants and annual fee waivers to struggling businesses, and also creates a grant program and allocates funds specifically for arts and cultural organizations as well as minority owned businesses, Berg said.

Otero County will receive $151,273 next year after being awarded a grant that will contribute to a single-entry structure project for the county courthouse.
The project includes remodeling the courts area to make room for a hearing room and an office for magistrate activities.
The Underfunded Grant Commission grant is a 50% matching grant, and the county will receive the total percent of the funds it requested, $151,273.
A single-entry point for the courthouse as well as a partial remodeling of the west-end courts area has been in the county s sights for over a year. The concept was previously addressed by the Justice Center Steering Committee, but plans to pitch a sales tax increase that would help fund a comprehensive Justice Center Master Plan to voters fell through due to the the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

One hundred thirty-five business owners in Otero County are expected to receive award letters and COVID-19 support checks Friday thanks to the way that the county worked with municipalities to pool extra CARES Act funding resources.
But as County Administrator Amy White-Tanabe said during the Monday Board of County Commissioners meeting, some businesses that applied for the funding will be receiving rejection letters.
In addition, more money could be coming via legislation called COVID-19 Relief Small And Minority Businesses Arts Organizations, or SB20B-001, that was signed on Dec. 7. It allocates funding for small businesses and arts, culture and entertainment organizations in counties that are under Level Red (severe) public health restrictions. Counties under severe restrictions must remain compliant with restrictions so businesses remain eligible for the financial support.
