Cotton prices in the global market have increased by four percent since the beginning of 2021 on US Department of Agriculture (USDA) projecting lower opening stocks, production and ending stocks this season (October 2020-September 2021), raising hopes of the commodity exports from India. ....

Private Traders Offer Higher Than MSP For Cotton In Punjab On Huge CCI Procurement, Spike In Yarn Rates

Punjab cotton growers are now being offered prices far higher than the MSP by private traders — as high as Rs 5,900 a quintal.
Even as a section of their fellow farmers is protesting against the agricultural reforms brought about by the Narendra Modi government, cotton growers in Punjab are reaping the benefits of the progressive policies that allow them to sell their produce to anyone of their choice anywhere in the country.
Punjab cotton growers are now being offered prices far higher than the minimum support prices (MSP) of Rs 5,515 a quintal fixed by the Union government for this season (July 2020-June 2021) by private traders. ....

Yarn prices surge in India as supplies fail to match demand, inventories dry up
Garment makers in Tiruppur have urged the spinning mills and the Ministry of Textiles to ensure there was no problem in supplying yarn.

Yarn prices, mainly those of cotton yarn, have increased sharply in the last few weeks as inventories dried up and supplies have failed to match demand and spinning mills delayed resumption of their operations across the country.
“For example, yarn of 30s count quoted at Rs 175 a kg during the peak of novel Coronavirus pandemic but now quoting around Rs 250,” said Anand Poppat, a Rajkot-based trader of raw cotton, yarn, and spinning waste. ....

Global cotton prices likely to gain on four-year low production, higher Chinese imports
Production in China and Australia were expected to increase, while in India, the world’s largest cotton grower, the output was likely to be the same as last year at 29.5 million bales.

Global cotton prices are seen gaining this season (July 2020-June 2021) in view of production projected at a four-year low, higher imports by China and lower carry forward stocks.
According to the International Cotton Advisory Council (ICAC), global cotton production is projected at 24.7 million tonnes against earlier estimates of 24.9 million tonnes. This is against 26.2 million tonnes output last season. ....
