About Us - Yoga Journal

Our history Yoga Journal has served the yoga community since 1975 by providing inspiration and instruction to those who want to learn about the practice and philosophy of yoga. For more than 5000 years, yoga has evolved and expanded to meet the needs of the people. And Yoga Journal has tried to do the same. We reflect the conversations shaping yoga at the moment and provide detailed information on how others can learn how to better navigate—and take pleasure in—life and wellness using the tools of yoga and meditation. Our contributors vary from well-known teachers, such as Jason Crandell and Rocky Heron, to those lesser-known but very well-versed individuals with such compelling insights to share that you’ll wonder why you’d never heard of them before. You can also hone your yoga skills by tapping into our library of master classes on Outside Learn, including courses by Judith Hanson Lasater, Rina Deshpande, Tias Little, DJ Townsel, Sri Dharma Mittra and more. We look forward to the journey ahead. Our staff Renee Marie Schettler is a senior editor at Yoga Journal. She started studying yoga nearly 20 years ago with teachers in New York City who emphasized challenging oneself and finding precise alignment in a posture. Her understanding of yoga changed when she began practicing with teachers who believe the practice is less about how we execute the asana and more about whether we can surrender into the stillness of it. She has been teaching yoga since 2017. You can follow her on Instagram at @reneemarieschettler. Tamara became Senior Editor at Yoga Journal after a career as a writer, editor, researcher, and yoga instructor. As a journalist, she covered all aspects of health, with a special interest the health issues of women and families of color, public health, and yoga’s impact on mental wellness. Prior to taking her role at Yoga Journal, she was a college journalism professor and taught the first for-credit yoga course at a historically Black college. Before that, she was Executive Editor of Essence magazine and an editor at Health and HealthQuest. She completed yoga teacher training and became a registered yoga teacher (RYT-200) with the Yoga Alliance in 2013. She received Yoga as a Peace Practice training in 2018, and meditation training with Susan Piver of the Open Heart Project in 2021.  She is a member of Black Yoga Teachers Alliance and the Yoga Service Council. Has published research on Alice Coltrane/Suryiasatchidananda’s role as the founder and leader of a vedantic center in Black Women and Public Health (SUNY Press, 2022) with Santiba Campbell and Yasmeen Long. She has presented about yoga, diversity, and health at the National Association of African American Studies National Conference, HBCU Faculty Development Network Conference, Black Communities: A Conference for Collaboration, Depression on College Campuses Conference (University of Michigan), Yoga Service Conference, Conference on African American & African Diasporic Cultures & Experience (CACE), and YogaFest NC.
