Walter translates Nordic myths through filter of one-man band

Local poet and vocalist Jeremiah Walter always found the Norse myths centered on Odin, Freya and other deities a rich stew that was relatively untapped in modern interpretations. His new album, Eighteen Magic Spells (Jeremiah Walter Music), would fit in the pantheon of low-fi classics, except for the wealth of unusual musical instruments Walter brings to bear on the project. From banjos and ukuleles to khaens and krars, Walter infuses the stories with a mystical presence. The impetus for his project came from his wife, Darla Slee, who created Norse myth paintings for an exhibit. Walter ponde...

DC Comics 'Dark Nights: Death Metal' soundtrack

Can’t wait until next month to start listening? You’re in luck—Rise Against’s “Broken Dreams, Inc.” has been out since September, and the album-opening track “Forged By Neron” from Grammy-winning metallers Mastodon just dropped today. The new song’s title references a demon lord of hell who appears throughout the series, and somehow that’s not even the heaviest thing about the song. Check it out here: If you did a double take at the part about new music from the late Bennington’s Grey Daze, we can explain. The band have already released a cover of Dramarama’s 1985 tra...

Manchester Orchestra - The Million Masks of God (Album Review) Friday, 07 May 2021 Photo: Shervin Lainez You could say the Atlanta quartet Manchester Orchestra are one of modern rock’s biggest secrets, seemingly destined to fly beneath the radar. It’s criminal in many ways, and a minor miracle that they’re not as highly regarded as Band Of Horses or Bears Den, bands that occasionally tread similar ground. ‘The Million Masks of God’, the band’s sixth studio LP, continues with a conceptual core of sorts, following up a similar approach on 2017’s ‘A Black Mile to the Su...

Light in the dark: Inside Manchester Orchestra's The Million Masks Of God — Kerrang!

Light in the dark: Inside Manchester Orchestra’s The Million Masks Of God Andy Hull and Robert McDowell talk faith, forgiveness, grief and Manchester Orchestra’s excellent new album The Million Masks Of God. Words: Mischa Pearlman In 1900, The Wild Knight & Other Poems, an early collection of poetry by English philosopher and essayist GK Chesterton, was published. One of the poems found within its pages is a simple four verse rumination on getting older called Gold Leaves, which details the shifting nature of the protagonist’s idea of what God is, as well as how his search for Him ...

New music by Manchester Orchestra, Marianne Faithfull and more - Vimarsana News

New music by Manchester Orchestra, Marianne Faithfull and more

New music by Manchester Orchestra, Marianne Faithfull and more Marianne Faithfull, "She Walks in Beauty" (BMG) The elevator pitch for this album doesn't do it justice. The veteran singer, known for '60s cuts such as "When Tears Go By," reads Romantic poetry (from Byron, Keats, Shelley and the like) over ethereal soundscapes by Nick Cave cohort Warren Ellis. Sounds self-indulgent, right? It's anything but. Faithfull's weathered yet still-exquisite voice draws each degree of emotion from these classic lyric lines, and Ellis' production proves sublime. This is a serene bit of beauty, a few momen...
