Eastern South Dakota needs more deer. That’s according to the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department, whose commission voted at its May meeting to decrease the number of East River white-tailed deer licenses that will be available to hunters for the second consecutive year. About 26,200 deer licenses will be available for the 2021 season, which is about 400 fewer than 2020. GFP officials have worked to increase the number of deer in the southeast since the early 2000s, as a decreased amount of habitat, harsh winters and bouts of disease have been harsh on the area’s deer population,...
For South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, it's more like a deer caught on trail camera. As part of an ongoing project between GFP and researchers at the University of Montana, about 360 trail cameras have been set in the Black Hills and parts of northwestern South Dakota.
