Screen Australia has announced $1.3 million for five online projects.
The announcement:
Screen Australia has announced $1.3 million of online production funding for five projects. Award-winning children’s series First Day will return for season 2, along with ReCancelled which follows on from director Luke Eve’s 2020 lockdown drama Cancelled.
The projects also include Sunset Paradise, a new series from the creators of YouTube hit Meta Runner; as well as animated children’s series Ginger & the Vegesaurs and comedy series The Emu War.
Screen Australia’s Senior Online Investment Manager Lee Naimo said, “We’re excited to support these projects which showcase engaging storytelling across a mix of genres including children’s, comedy, animation and a relationship drama. We are always looking for projects that have solid pathways to audience and we are very impressed by the range shown in this slate, whether it’s via platforms such as ABC iview or targeting significant existing fan bases like Glitch Productions’ Sunset Paradise on YouTube and Luke Eve’s ReCancelled on Facebook.”

Netflix's Special adds two new LGBTQ+ characters in it's upcoming season


O’Connell reflected on the journey the show has taken and its impact on his life.
“After two seasons, Special is sadly coming to an end. Thank you to the fans and Netflix for allowing me to make exactly the show I wanted to make and for giving me 30-minute episodes to finish the story. Creating this show has been the highlight of my g-damn life,” he said.
Season two of Special will follow Ryan (Ryan O’Connell) getting his life back on track.
Over the course of eight episodes, viewers will watch Ryan juggle self-discovery alongside his relationship with newcomer Tanner (Max Jenkins).

Ryan O’Connell’s hit Netflix series, Special, is set to return for a second and final season.
Special is back and will be bigger than ever! Based on O’Connell’s memoir, I’m Special: And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves, the hit Netflix series follows a gay man living with mild cerebral palsy who decides to rewrite his identity and pursue the life he has always wanted.
Picking up from last season, the new episodes will expand into a 30 minutes comedy that will dig deep into the lives of fan-favourite characters.

The previously announced second season of Netflix's Emmy-nominated shortform comedy will grow from 15-minute to half-hour episodes for what will be its final round of eight episodes when it returns May 20.
