AROUND ANASTASIA ISLAND: Secret of Christmas tree revealed Lorraine Thompson Much was different about the Christmas of 2020 including Surf Illumination and the lighting of the St. Augustine Beach Christmas tree. The tale of the giant tree was recently revealed by Bill Jones, president of the St. Augustine Beach Civic Association. “For nearly 20 years, the Civic Association’s Surf Illumination has faced many challenges regarding the community Christmas Tree,” Jones explained. “We’ve always had difficulty keeping a tree green alive in the salt air. At one point a very large and beautiful artificial tree was purchased. That tree looked great until late night partygoers vandalized it,” Jones continued. ....

But, worst of all, Anne Heymen went aloft! Anne had written her last column of “It’s a Great Life. Her cats How-ling and Cleopawtra have been adopted by a fellow cat lover. No more articles about searching for gifts purchased earlier and forgotten stashed away in closets, no more stories about You-Know-Who, or of trips to Cedar Key or Key West. The triangle of neighbors had kept vigil, managed all things, fed and played with the cats while Anne was in hospital, Bayview and hospital again. Jo, Rene, Vicki, Peter stayed with Anne until she left to be with God and You-Know-Who. ....

Longtime St. Augustine Record writer Anne Heymen dies Heymen, 80, joined The Record in 1962 Margo Pope Anne Carling Heymen, longtime writer for The St. Augustine Record, died on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020, at the Bailey Family Center for Caring. Heymen, 80, was a native of Forks Township, Pennsylvania. She joined The Record in 1962 after graduation from Stetson University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She was a longtime resident of St. Augustine Beach. Her parents moved to St. Augustine Beach while she was in college. They owned and operated Surf Crest Village, a family-centered resort, for many years. In a 2014 interview announcing her retirement, Heymen said she had worked for and with 11 publishers and 11 editors and that it was time to retire. ....
