INDIANAPOLIS – An existing state vendor sent a critical letter to Gov. Eric Holcomb on Thursday questioning the award of a new state prison medical services contract to the highest bidder.
The letter from Wexford of Indiana/Wexford Health Sources notes the state turned down an earlier renewal proposal from the company that would have saved the state $40 million a year compared to the new contract.
“I am writing to express the mixture of disappointment, anger, and confusion I feel regarding the state's recent decision to not re-award its statewide offender health care contract to Wexford of Indiana. As the incumbent vendor for the aforementioned contract, Wexford has been a faithful and productive partner to the State for the past four years,” the letter from President and CEO Daniel Conn said.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana could pay about 50% more a year for prison medical services with a new contractor picked by state officials.
The four-year contract with Centurion Health will pay an average of about $160 million a year to the company that submitted the most expensive of four vendor proposals, The (Fort Wayne) Journal Gazette reported. That compares to an annual $106 million cost the previous four years.
General medical services are included in the contract as well as behavioral health, addiction recovery and maternal child health for the nearly 24,000 inmates in the state prison system.

INDIANAPOLIS – A new $643 million state contract for prison medical services is the most expensive proposal from four vendors vying to provide the services.
The four-year contract was awarded to Centurion Health of Indiana LLC, at a cost of about $160 million a year. Centurion – and its parent company Centene Corp. – is also embroiled in several controversies and lawsuits, including an allegation of a rigged contract in Tennessee and substandard care in Mississippi.
The departing vendor, Wexford of Indiana LLC, bid about $30 million less a year but Department of Correction Chief Communications Officer Annie Goeller said price is only one factor considered.

Indiana tries to combat prison staff shortages but is it enough?

Indianaâs prison officials say a recent boost in starting pay for correctional officers has quickly increased the number of job applicants and nearly erased serious staffing shortages.
But some say an incident last month in Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, in which a correctional officer was killed and another wounded, might be the latest symptom of chronic understaffing in the stateâs prisons and lingering restrictions tied to those staff shortages, which have been compounded by the pandemic.
On Feb. 21, 57-year-old Lt. Eugene Lasco was stabbed to death by an inmate when he went to the rescue of 22-year-old Sgt. Padrick Schmitt, who had been attacked, Indianaâs Department of Correction said in a news release.
