Eastern Cape police recruits fall short

The Eastern Cape police had to call for reinforcements from national government after close to 700 of its own recruits failed critical clearance tests, including an integrity test, which they have to pass to become police men and women. The province had spots for more 2,000 new constables in 2024 but after 692 failed the test, the SA Police Service (SAPS) had to bring in recruits from other provinces.

One person is feared to have drowned off East London’s Eastern Beach during a busy long weekend, while six others narrowly escaped with their lives between Saturday and Sunday morning.

One person is feared to have drowned off East London’s Eastern Beach during a busy long weekend. Six others narrowly escaped with their lives between Saturday and Sunday morning when they were rescued at the same beach. Authorities have blamed alcohol consumption as a contributing factor in the incidents of near drowning.

BCM passes new bylaws to recover debts

Buffalo City Metro is working overtime to find creative ways of complying with its own credit control bylaw passed recently by the council. This comes after the city was boxed into a corner over its illegal enforcement of its credit controls. Whenever a customer in arrears buys electricity, BCM takes 80% to service their total debt.

BCM ratchets up security as threats to personnel grow

Security for councillors and senior officials in Buffalo City Metro is again in the spotlight after the council, in a closed meeting on Friday, approved a security detail for key officials.This comes just weeks after infrastructure director Nceba Ncunyana, who had previously acted as municipal manager, was shot dead on the N2 near Ntabozuko (formerly Berlin) on his way to a meeting. Ncunyana had been granted a protection detail by the city after he survived a second attempt on his life in 2022.

Quigney residents vow to banish car washers from beachfront

Fed-up residents of Quigney have vowed to get rid of all the car washers operating on the beach from this week. A group of residents, together with their neighbourhood crime forum and ward councillor Funeka Wolose, will on Wednesday “clean up” the beachfront which has seen a rise in pollution caused by dirty water from car washing and dumping by motorists.
