Frontiers | Seasonal, Annual, and Decadal Distribution of Three Rorqual Whale Species Relative to Dynamic Ocean Conditions Off Oregon, USA

Whale populations recovering from historical whaling are particularly vulnerable to incidental mortality and disturbance caused by growing ocean industrialization. Several distinct populations of rorqual whales (including humpback, blue, and fin whales) migrate and feed off the coast of Oregon, USA where spatial overlap with human activities are on the rise. Effective mitigation of conflicts requires better foundational understanding of spatial and temporal habitat use patterns to inform conservation management. Based on a year-round, multi-platform distance sampling dataset (2016-2021, 177 survey days, 754 groups observed), this study generated density models to describe and predict seasonal distribution of rorqual whales in Oregon. Phenology analysis of sightings revealed a peak of humpback whale and blue whale density over the Oregon continental shelf in August and September respectively, and higher fin whale density in the winter (December). Additionally, we compared rorqual sighting rates across three decades of survey effort (since 1989) and demonstrate that rorqual whales are strikingly more prevalent in the current dataset, including distinct increases of blue and fin whales. Finally, density surface models relating whale densities to static and dynamic environmental variables acquired from data-assimilative ocean models revealed that summer and spring rorqual distribution were influenced by dynamic oceanographic features indicative of active upwelling and frontal zones (respectively 27 % and 40 % deviance explained). On the continental shelf, blue whales were predicted to occur closer to shore than humpback whales and in the more southern waters off Oregon. Summer and spring rorqual models, and humpback whale models, showed predictive performance suitable for management purposes, assessed through internal cross-validation and comparison to an external dataset (388 groups observed). Indeed, monthly hotspots of high predicted rorqual whale density across multiple years were validated by independent sightings (77 % overlap in the summer model). These predictive models lay a robust basis for fine-scale dynamic spatial management to reduce impacts of human activities on endangered populations of rorqual whales in Oregon.

The art of solving problems with Monte Carlo simulations

The Go programming language is deemed to be
the most promising programming language today due to its speed and simplicity, and I recommend you to at least get acquainted with it.
Quick Introduction
Generally speaking, Monte Carlo methods (or simulations) consist of a broad class of computational algorithms that rely on repeated random sampling to obtain numerical results. This technique is used throughout areas such as physics, finance, engineering, project management, insurance, and transportation, where a numerical result is needed and the underlying theory is difficult and/or unavailable.
It was invented by John von Neumann, Stanisław Ulam, and Nicholas Metropolis, who were employed on a secret assignment in the Los Alamos National Laboratory, while working on a nuclear weapon project called the Manhattan Project. It was named after a well-known casino town called Monaco, since chance and randomness are core to the modeling approach, similar to a game of roulette.

How I Got a Computer Science Degree in 3 Months for Less Than $5000

December 18, 2020
This is the story of how I prepared for a decade to graduate in 3 months.
In 2012, I dropped out of college, where I was studying computer science, after just one semester. I already knew how to program and I thought I’d never need a degree.
Over the years, I found myself complaining a lot about it. I saw many opportunities, especially abroad, that were out of reach because I didn’t have the required papers. I felt ready for graduate school but couldn’t get admitted. I had to work harder to prove myself to employers. Although I never noticed any serious gap in my knowledge, I felt that something was missing. I started to resent my decision.

Again I say Ah. Ha. Ha ha there is absolutely no place I'd rather be in the whole wide world than right here in the town hall in New York City and your kitchen or car or airplane or wherever you happen to be listening they see evening I'm really glad you're here makes the whole thing a lot more festive Now if you've listened to this show more than a Wants You probably know that I grew up in a do you religious household that means that this time of year I find the ghost of my fundamentalist Christmas past haunting my very secular holiday present. I respectfully I have a real problem with the stereotypes that your snowman isn't forcing. I'm I'm not sure what you mean yeah sometimes we can't see what's right in front of us. For instance look what he's wearing a vest on the top right what financial bracket do you think that puts him in. I don't know you don't know who wears vests and top hats Mr Dylan but that's exactly right so we. Think your snowman is crushing the working. Are you there Tom I hope you are I am Chris excellent Hello New York. On behalf of Live From here I continue my journey across the country shining a light on all the good people in America sounds like an amazing show so far because you're a very kind man Tom. Let's see where were you this week. This week I traveled to Austin Texas. You know how you have that nice winter feeling in New York right now that tells you it's Christmas the most magical time of the year yeah you know it's been perfect here. Yeah well there's none of that year. This isn't exactly the land of White Christmas temperatures have been in the high sixty's under sun filled skies and people are Christmas shopping in cowboy hats and flip flops. It's like a candy cane coated spring break. They have the Spirit but like everything in Texas they do things their own way I saw a stuffed armadillo dressed like a Christmas elf. Kids were decorating Christmas cactuses with Chili Peppers. And I saw what I thought was a cow of the same to be aired but it turned out just to be a fat old dog. But it does sound like Austin to me being being weird is that's their thing right yeah it's kind of like the crazy younger brother of Texas . It's a little cowboy a little hippie and they want everyone to get drunk. But but they're sneaky about it everywhere you go they quietly slip you a drink and before you know it you're trying to walk a straight line out of breakfast. There is amazing food there though have you got anything great. Yeah but they're even a little weird about that. Everyone told me I had to go look for this amazing barbecue that they serve in the back of a gas station Hey Chris and if you ever wandered into a gas station started seeing a plate of barbecue and suddenly realize you were just eating some mechanics lunch . No I haven't I have. I don't understand why people get so excited about food that comes from weird places why are we all of a sudden eating out of trucks whatever happened to eating in a restaurant. I know I'm supposed to think it's cool but whenever I'm served from a truck I always feel like I'm getting rations from fema. To tell him you're in Austin I mean that there is some really good home cooking done there. Yeah but home cooking is weird too I don't know what their home is like. What if it's a weird home filled with stray cats and a creepy grandpa I. Remember when you were a kid you'd walk into a friend's house and it always smelled weird it made you look at your friend in a home new light Who are you why do you all smell like this and when your parents looking in here. And yet one of the great mysteries of life your house had no smell at all. No Forget trucks forget home cooking give me an old fashioned restaurant with health codes and rat traps. And where everyone is required to wash their hands by law my friends grandmother was a great cook and I love beating her food until I start cooking it she used her hands a spoon. Yes but there are some great people in Austin have you met anybody out there. Oh yeah yeah I've met some amazing colorful people here I went to Stubbs you know Stubbs right you been there many many times yeah amazing place to live country music and they serve classic restaurants barbecue I sat on the back porch in between bands and ordered a cold beer and sat next to the strange why are we cowboy Skeets he was an old an old and whether it is the mountains he had deep wrinkles was missing a couple teeth and look like Willie Nelson's much older brother. He said if I bought him a beer he'd tell me a tale and if I bought him too he'd make it a good one. So I did he told me that he was born in the desert and they found him in a radio rattlesnake nest he figures he must've had parents but he never actually met them. He doesn't remember much of a childhood either he said I feel like I was born old I worked out on the range wrasslin cattle digging trenches shooting up bad guys I guess it was a hard life but then again no one gets out of here by way of the fast lane he said I will tell you this though and this bit of advice you can keep for free the most important thing in life is this you've got to fall in love I only fell one time and by golly it made my life her name was Daisy said I laid eyes on her across a wheat field it was as if she was an angel and God was smiling on me my breath was taken my knees buckled and I was struck by love but also cursed because Daisy could never be mine it turned out she belonged to someone else and I was destined to pine for her for the rest of my days but I will say that when I lay my head down at night under the stars alone on my dirt filled bed roll alongside a babbling brook near the bad side of town filled with ne'er do wells to be a con man and shifty Carney folk. I do rest easy. Because I know in my heart that if I can't have Daisy I won't take another I'm an old man now so when I say this it comes from a place of knowing. Sweet sweet Daisy was simply the finest golden retriever there ever was. Kris of ever bought 6 beers for an old cowboy for an authentic story and realized you were scammed. Actually I have. Me too I'm packing my bags and headed your way Chris I'll see you in New York next week for the big holiday show until next time this is been Tom Papa out in America. Thank. You it has been a hell of a week for musicians birthday starting with Sheila Cecilia Escovedo That's right she let me hear the queen of percussion musicians and always been obsessed with her but she took the world airwaves by storm in June of 1984 sounded a little something like this. She. Consented to have to be. Made White made white of White Stripes fame of course a nature with a pair of drum sticks her playing is a testament to the power of dispensing with the extraneous 1st time I heard her it's the fall of 2001 and I'm wandering through a little record store in Atlanta when this song comes barreling out of the speakers . Guitars Happy Birthday. Boy I was excited to see this legend pop up on my list Dionne Warwick. Who had 56 count em 56 songs on the Billboard Top 100 between 19621998 what am I war with the p.d.f. . I 56 itself is no more impactful than this. Much Cloyd Tyner McCoy Tyner. One of the most influential jazz pianists of all time I talked to John Batiste about the fact that this is because birthday week couple days ago when he started waxing sentimental about a record and song called Fly With the Wind John did you you grew up listening to yeah love imitating McCoy until I met him and he told me stop doing that I. Brooks Philip Brooks. Now ringing about. Well it turns out he's the fellow that wrote the lyrics to. Oh. Town of. So please rise. You 2 out there in radio land. Here we go. Here's. Was. A. Sad. Lol. Lol. Lol. He is. Half. The. Battle. The. A. Love. Was. You're beautiful all of you that's a lot of kids so you know but counting on the banjo to put on John's things Tommy he's been hostile to this album talk the talk in the secret himself Mr Mike Elizondo and we will be right back after a certain intermission You're listening to Live from here with Chris feely at the Town Hall in New York. So we'll keep following the politics of this Meantime investigators have a big task in front of them to find the person behind these packages Joining us now is Jimmy Oxley a professor and bomb expert at the University of Rhode Island Jimmy welcome thank you and you've assisted in federal investigators in analyzing bombing incidents before when you look at this string of suspicious packages What stands out to you about these compared to other past incidents. Are only the the fame of the people who are being targeted if we look at past bombing incidences we just haven't had such high profile victims if the 1st set of bombings actually would date back to the early 1900 when it was a labor rising but probably in your listeners remembered history was the Unabomber or Leroy moody or Eric roundoff who were doing abortion clinics but those seem camos faceless to us do you think we'll figure out who's doing this I'm sure that we will what I've done from law enforcement in the past is really research pipe bombs I've shot 130 pipe bombs looking at how they fragment looking at how little material you can put in them to get a true detonation. The fragmentation study really was if we could decide what had been in it if it had already exploded now in this case law enforcement is fortunate because they haven't tacked devices and nobody was hurt so there is tons of evidence I think they'll be resolving this rather quickly what does it tell you that none of these so far have exploded. I hope it means we're a whole lot smarter after the Amtrak's letter letters a few years ago we we instituted a whole bunch of ways of screening mail that we felt was legal the post office has a very strange little balance they try to maintain between privacy and protection so for government officials the the mail you go through a screening protocol. I'm sure for some of these high profile people like George Soros he has his own little protective protocol and looking at these so they were detected the now you can speculate that they didn't go off because they were only meant to scare and I've heard people speculate that but without knowing anything about how they're putting together we haven't seen anything but external pictures yet. It's it's too soon to speculate that and it has to be treated very seriously and assume that we've done a great job on detection what would be the 1st thing you would do to try to figure out where these are coming from. Well looking at the postmark and there was a postmark that I could see on one of the pictures locate where they might be sent from in the case of ones that were hand delivery I'm sure there knowing that there's going to be a lot of video. Evidence of where they are coming from there's evidence all over the outside of the packaging that you can believe somebody is going through and then in terms of the actual pipe the clock all of that they're going to look for where this was acquired they're going to start in the area where they think the bombs originated and move out from there to see who bought it I think each of us is on video more times than we think we are in this modern day and age you say that we are getting smarter now does it look like the person who is doing this is a sophisticated attack or do I think he's sophisticated. I don't think you have to be terribly sophisticated to do a bombing of any kind that's why it over the centuries it's remained popular. Ever since explosives were invented bombing has become a way of expressing unhappiness or anger that is Jimmy Oxley a professor at the University of Rhode Island who studies explosives detection mitigation and response to things just like we're seeing right now thank you so much for joining us thank you. Let's go to Dallas now for an update on the shooting death of 26 year old both of John by Dallas police officer Amber Geiger you remember when Officer Geiger fatally shot John in his own apartment last month she was off duty coming home after a long shift she told police she confused his apartment for hers but was a Geiger acting as a Dallas police officer when she shot the 26 year old black accountant lawyer say she might have been and that could have big legal implications Christopher Connelly from member station looks at that fuzzy line between when an off duty officer is an officer and when there are civilian. There's still a lot about the night of September 6th that we don't know details of what exactly happened between Amber Geiger and both him John but one fact that came out early has made it into practically every news story officer was still wearing her uniform and she claims she went to the wrong apartment she was still in her uniform in uniform full uniform still in uniform during the incident and that matters according to leave Merritt he's a lawyer for both him John's family who says the family plans to sue not just Geiger but also the city of Dallas Merritt says Geiger's uniform her badge the fact that she used her service weapon that she says she issued verbal commands to John before shooting him it all matters to Mr Shaw and to other members of the public she was holding herself out to be a police officer which she in fact is and so then when she's operating them of color state authority and that would make her liable under 1000 maybe 3 in the city as well 983 is a reference to the part of federal law that allows people to sue state or local officials for violating their constitutional rights Jennifer Lauren teaches civil rights law at the University of Texas Law School in Austin and she says the 1st step in bringing a lawsuit like this is to demonstrate that in the course of undertaking the conduct that allegedly caused the violation of rights that they that they were under and that they were acting under color of law that they were using their state authority in some way basically that Geiger was acting as a police officer when she shot both them John that she was not just a regular person Lauren says the fact that Geiger was off duty is not necessarily the determining factor for a court to decide that the police officer even though officially off duty right clocked out might still be using their official power or using the trappings of their office were using a thought. Already that their position gives them to undertake the actions that are complained of if John family lawyer leave marriage can establish that Geiger was acting as a police officer when she shot John then he can argue that as an agent of the government she deprived John of his constitutional rights but to go that next step to prove the city is liable for Geiger's actions on that night that's more difficult says Art Brender Fort Worth attorney who has tried police misconduct cases to hold her lawyer the city responsible owner 93 you have to show that there was a custom or policy of unconstitutional actions which that policy directly caused . His death Geiger's attorney hasn't commented on the potential lawsuit and he's called The Killing a tragic mistake in a statement a spokesman said the city wouldn't comment on pending litigation but leave Barrett argues the city is liable he says Geiger relied on the Dallas police department's training when she decided in appropriately merit says to fire at John he goes on to say that the city should have disciplined or retrained Geiger after a previous on duty shooting that was not fatal and for which Geiger was not indicted and finally merit says Geiger got the kind of preferential treatment from the department after killing both him John that's reserved for on duty shootings it's that training and it's that protocol on it's that failure to discipline that has resulted in a coach or that's quite frankly out of control with the use of deadly force still legal experts say these suits have a very high bar holding cities responsible for their police officers actions is tough and in many cases they can drag on for years says he plans to file his lawsuit this week for here and now I'm Christopher Connelly in Dallas. The Democratic nominee for governor in Illinois has contributed more money to his own campaign than any other candidate in history some voters don't like that it's just the stress thing where you see the figures and I just feel like it makes people think that their democracy really isn't about money more money in Illinois politics plus the latest on suspicious packages sent to prominent Democrats this afternoon on All Things Considered from n.p.r. It's here now and we're in Florida ahead of the midterms and also after hurricane Michel cut an unbelievable swath through the Florida Panhandle in the northwest part of the state just truly unbelievable to see a looming crisis homelessness thema and a group like the American Red Cross are providing temperature but then what is the sea for the poor in the low income where we can McCarthy is a senior News producer with w f s you and me and I know you and your colleagues have been really pulling at this threat is quite a story Michael Midland for for more than 2 weeks ago but so many people still displaced do we know how many right when I last spoke with Fema they told me there are more than a 1000 people in shelters at this point and of course we know that not everyone who was displaced by the storm are those people in the shelters so we can imagine that that number is much greater than that you know 1000 or so people will some of the with family or friends or in cars of your colleague when Hatter spoke with Tanya Denise Graham she was evicted from a low income housing project in Panama City because of the storm damage let's listen. Polished. Myself. I don't have the money. I want to do which was always. My front door you. Know when I go I want to I don't. Know any. So you multiply her I'm sure by many and she has been approved for Fema rental assistance we forget about I mean she was in low income housing but there are all these renters who don't have any recourse she got a Fema rental assistant and is waiting on a check but but then what I mean where she's supposed to she can find housing but we're supposed to find housing right that's that's the difficult thing is that there aren't a lot of places if. Right now for housing Fema has made some hotels available there are vouchers that you can use to say these hotels but many of them are outside of the hardest hit areas so people have to have transportation to get there really there's about 20 that are accepting those vouchers and they do say you know trailers are on the way people think about those Fema trailers but there seems to be you know some slowdown in the process they say they need to work with local governments they can't just come in there and say Here we come we're putting these trailers here the local governments need to ask for it and of course those local governments are still putting themselves back together and so I think that's why we're seeing sort of this slow response there also shelters of course well and by the way people all over the place in their booty shorts they're working very hard you spoke with Michelle chestnut though she was staying in a shelter in a local high school and just when to listen to. Save a church I mean it was just like all the windows busted out the back and all the trees come down the church that. I know her house was destroyed a brother and wall this house is strong Yeah we know our homes whoso 1st of all clarify for us because driving around this is driven home we're in the panhandle people might be picturing you know Miami Beach and thinking these are 2nd homes or beach homes they're not right this is that part of Florida where we have a lot more rural people a lot more low income people and so these these are even people who maybe don't have any insurance on their homes they are homes that have been handed down for generations and so since they have no mortgage at they really don't have room in their budget for insurance they don't have that insurance which will make this recovery even more difficult they don't have that way to begin rebuilding their homes well and rebuilding with what because with so many things down incomes have been cut another big challenge is joblessness that's looming and you heard from Wal-Mart manager in Mariana who said people are showing up who are. Even though they have really trying circumstances let's hear it we're getting. Close we've got they are. And. He lost his house but after 2 days here. You can recover from in a lot of that. When he says we got there he means is he conditioning. How are people getting by they have no income I think that it's tough I'm hearing from people who who are very concerned about it Gilmore had opened his store I mean it wasn't open to the public but he was allowing his employees to come in and just help with the clean out process so that they could get a paycheck many of these people are living paycheck to paycheck there is some unemployment like specifically storm related unemployment assistance available through the state but again that's difficult for say a fisherman who maybe don't have a good way of tracking what their income has been and so they don't have a good way of applying for that assistance running water mostly back in some places it's not drinkable communications as we have discovered are still pretty spotty it's just really I have to say it's just remarkable to see the trees uprooted everywhere even here you know inland Tallahassee roofs off high school 50 miles inland it's really quite humbling. F s w f as you senior news producer reading McCarthy thanks so much for sharing your reporting with us thank you we've been talking about housing even those able to return to homes and it's unbelievable again we have pictures here now dot org are having trouble here now is Chris Bentley went to the coast and brought back this look. Much of the area between Mexico Beach in Port St Joe looks like a hurricane went through yesterday not 2 weeks ago cars and boats are turned on their sides and strewn across streets and lawns homes are split wide open there's debris everywhere but for those able to return to their homes this part of the Florida Panhandle is one big construction site Troy Bryant watches as workers tear the shingles off his roof here and I want all the same well I just had the new roof but on last September Bryant and his wife Conny bought this beachfront property and moved here from Georgia earlier this year they stayed in a hotel in Mariana Florida during the storm and returned 2 days later to find their new home intact but severely damaged well when I 1st drove up I thought well you know the garage doors were mine will be but I thought well it's not so bad. And then you walk out to the back door of the garage and it opened up and then this is what you're seeing right here just utter devastation I had a white picket fence that we had just built all around the front of the house there's part of it in the back that was part of it in the garage. That house right there. Used to be right there Brian says that house is 40 feet from where it used to be. Janice and Allan Crone and live a few blocks back from the beach they were on vacation in Tennessee when the storm hit and when they came back they found 4 feet of water swept through the building. They also saw whole houses lifted off their foundations and swept into the street by the storm surge and high winds this 2nd block most valuable things have some sort of game engine horse like theirs was pushed up or it got kind of totaled Gino and there's a house in the street to the right of your house in this it was catty corner of that law. And so when the storm surge came up it started flooding of course and it just tore a literary on and landed there and of course you see our neighbor's car weigh on that and her nails. The Cronin's are spending their new retirement repairing their house by hand living out a camper in their backyard they're determined to stay but Alan Cronin says this area will never be the same there's a large percentage of these homes that were owned by grandma. Grandma Grandpa would not rebuild in here grandma grandpa screams. Keep in mind that a 3rd to a half the house is doing here where I should build you before 970 they were literally not built to Eeny hurricane they were built for. Fishing camping and people have lived in him for years now they're not going to live for me anymore and in 5 years this won't be the same place it was lifelong residents Clark downs and his daughter Kimberly Downes Norton rode out the storm and Clark's house I was confident on the Category $1.00 and $2.00 but then after I realized it was going to be 3 or 4 it was too late. And luckily we survived it. Today they're helping their neighbor clear down to trees from his yard Clark says Michael was a historic storm there's a history here. When I started school here and elementary school there's a book called a great time where the city was destroyed 3 times once far west by yellow fever and once by a tidal wave which it was really a hurricane coming this is number 4 the real combat what he said that I just know the people you know come back and are sorry come in that you're already building Well you have got through 1st time and I've got 2 people coming to straighten some of the messes out so you know. What you think you really do think this has to change or will I don't think it was. Going to be more beautiful that we can see more of the stars at night now you know we had so many trees before on the yard we couldn't see this that many stars and now we can like and see all the stars and it can take a lot of work to get get it back together but we're reading Gulf County Sheriff Mike Harrison shares Clark's optimism he and most of his staff slept in the sheriff's office for more than a week after the storm. Being around the clock with rescue and recovery efforts as a lot of people have conversations about where were you when 911 happened our previous generation was where were you when j.f.k. Got shot how I think our generation here is going to say well where you or you when Michael came through we've got a long ways to go to get us back to our small home proud start in this Friday at 3 o'clock we're having a hometown football game here. Friday night we were hitch his play and I were in front labor in Franklin County the little things like that are going to get our community back tore it needs to be but it's just going to take time but for the world out there you know we've got a long ways to go but we're going to get there the people returning to golf county have a long road ahead but Harrison says they're the lucky ones they have a home left to rebuild for here and now I'm Chris that me and Sanchez Beach Florida . Thank you. For their work and thanks also to our new friends. And the people in the Panhandle who talked to us despite having much more important things to do thank you and we will keep a good. This is here and now from n.p.r. And I'm Jeremy Hobson The markets are trying to gain ground today after a huge selloff yesterday the s. And p. $500.00 fell 3 percent wiping out gains for the year and putting it in correction territory that means stocks have fallen 10 percent from their previous peak it is a signal to investors that the volatility could be more than just a blip Robin far as that host the podcast full disclosure he joins us now hi robin Hi Jeremy and all year we've been hearing about the market's record setting bull run then suddenly it started tanking as soon as we hit October I don't know if they got spooked or what well that's how this happens historically new highs they're built on forgetting things like 2008 or 87 or the flash crash the spook outs they happen much more often than they've been happening over the past decade but if you go and look at the long chart of the Dow or the s. And p. 500 you'll find that it's all family all just noise Meanwhile step back from all this emerging markets they've had something of a lost decade here in the us are equities they've had a fab 10 years after their worst decade since the Depression in the end I think it all comes out in the wash well and when you look at the earnings reports that have been coming out from companies a lot of them are positive Microsoft is up Tesla is up and actually profitable for once even Ford reported revenue above expectations despite complaining that President Trump's tariffs have cost a $1000000000.00 in profit this year what about all of that things could be a lot worse profits are still near record levels cash buybacks cash give backs dividends the fiscal environment it's all extremely favorable The question is how much of we've been pricing that in for a decade Look I'm old enough to remember when the market actually fell 30 percent in a year Jeremy banks were failing left and right every company was suspected of being an Enron or World Com You know when the back when the Red Sox were a joke this is ancient history people have to remember that things do fall apart. What about the midterm elections how do you think that is playing into what we're seeing in the markets if at all not much I mean the market's pretty much priced in the likelihood of Democrats probably recapturing the House of Representatives there's only so much Congress can do to blunt the worry right now over trade wars or the Federal Reserve ratcheting rates higher and what about the idea that the market has been due for a correction for a while least according to a lot of analysts he is a sell off really such a bad thing if that's what's going on I don't think it's necessarily about the look my mom used to take me to the Macy's one day sale on on these Wednesdays you likely put it on the calendar for 5 times a year I remember Zeke every cheap pants were half off why then weren't Macy's shoppers mourning the prevalence of one day sales why wasn't she n.b.c. Doing special reports on the worrying decline in Macy's prices looks stock still off there a fact of life those who can stay balanced and calm and focus can use these opportunities whether they're rebalancing or investing more into their kids $529.00 you know you get it but if you're watching and you're looking at your $41.00 k. Or whatever and you're seeing it fall down my advice would be just don't look at it when the market goes down but what's your advice Ron you know I told you before to go make a sandwich or Netflix and chill today Jeremy All I'm saying is all we are is dust in the wind stay balanced stay on excitable be greedy when others are fearful enjoy the World Series especially if the Dodgers rally I sure hope that you you're from l.a. I am and know I have a lot of family from Miami right and then you have a lot of family you know like Ok I grew up loving the Dodgers it's 30 years Jeremy Chad a tearful right well good luck with that they're down to nothing at the moment and little more than luck Robin far as that house of the 5 has full disclosure Thank you my pleasure it's here now. And Morning Edition on this station tomorrow morning what happened while you were sleeping and the news interviews and analysis for the day ahead national international and local news tomorrow on Morning Edition. It's here now which way were pom the other day we drove outside Tallahassee to the beautiful with strings lodge where between the lodge and the blue water some men seem to be surveying their archaeologists under white canopies excavating a pit 10 feet wide 3 feet and millenia Deep be lined up just right to make it work properly All right got it 4.762 where's nuts yet you're on it on Ok. I'm Dr Andy Hemmings with your solar research institute and we are at the edge of a pit that we are excavating dating from modern stuff right at the top all the way down to potentially maybe 15000 years ago some of the earliest occupation not only in Florida but in the new world we're kind of just getting to that the good stuff as we get through the earliest Holocene material and get into the end of the Ice Age the end of the terminal Pleistocene material we'll be looking at things in the $12.00 to $14.00 innocent like I said as much as 15000 year old range. Buckets are lined up shovels gently pushed across the pits floor scraping noise thousands of years with every layer careful exacting work you never know what you might have. Been finding stone tools just somebody knocked a big flake off it was really sharp and wanted it so they took a little on what piece of Amber or another hammerstone perhaps and just sharpened it up a little bit more a drill the tip of broken off of that and we're probably guessing and again in the 56000 year old range part of today's excitement has been that we had a little lens of charcoal and as we dug it out this morning it started to have some structure to it all Tom said perhaps corn cob is a corn cob shouldn't be in 1000 year old dirtier but it's conceivable so so that will be the that will be the exciting this afternoon is removing this little pedestal that's got quite a bit of charcoal and if. The scraped material is dumped into the buckets and poured out over what looks like a screen door laying on its side on legs so now a little over here to a screen everybody knows what this looks like it's framed and you're brushing that sand through what he looking for fun flakes little pieces of stone that they were when they're making a projectile point and want to get one there but make up these are tiny little tiny for they're taking an adherent wire and sharpening an arrowhead or a projectile point and they make these little tiny flakes with the could you tell and on their larger and larger one it's a half the quarter of an inch long Yeah it's big Yeah that's a bit more how do you know that's what they were doing with it there's they have what they call the primitive Arts Festival for people making Arrowhead today. And this is the debit ties that is what's on the floor after they get through making the same jingle point. Except the this is probably 10000 years old. I just touch something 10000 years already this is cool oh but that me it was my head that's Dr Henning who just wiped out a few 100 years of history with one foot on it there's so many ways to mess up here . It's funny but the reason he slipped may not be artifacts are most beneficial to archaeologists they reveal their stories best when they're found where they were left and storms like the recent hurricane Michel can disturb that if you stand in a place long enough you can feel the sand compressing a little bit and it's causing us no end of problems and agitations if you think that's the right as you as you shake your fist at the elements it just now impotently. But these things are thousands of years old so they've been shifted sure if they're in place and not currently excavate and that's really why we were so very concerned is that we have an open excavation period almost a metre deep with soils that have not seen the light of day for the better part of 1000 years we've we've made it vulnerable and so we cover this with tarps sandbag the whole thing and we got awful like. And so they continue the work that was started by a man who devoted his life to saving the history beneath Florida's soil and found this site when a sewer pipe was laid the original work was done by the then state archaeologist Calvin Jones just along the sidewalk outside the lodge in 1904 and that's when some of the most important earliest finds were made Calvin Jones isn't he the one who got a wheelbarrow of loan delivered to his home and he's the one who realized that there was some ancient tool in that who said wait a 2nd yeah he yet the Jacksons and he's the one who said wait a 2nd this dirt is more than dirt is part of this ancient burial site yeah they had a delivery dirt and within the dirt there were are facts. That is archaeologist Barbara Clark of the Florida public archaeology network and we've traveled to the place where Calvin Jones got his loan and realized it held treasures It's now the Lake Jackson mountains archaeology State Park in Tallahassee a beautiful carpet of law leading to grass covered hills that rise like the backs of green elephant one bigger than the others Ok we walked across that vast lawn and there it is I mean how how high in the air would you say this mound this is the tallest of the 7 mountains it is 36 feet tall these mounds were built basket by basket load of dirt and let's just back up what exactly is the mound this site is actually part of what's called the Southeastern ceremonial complex which is the south eastern regions version of the Mississippian culture known by many as the mound builders over time they would build these mounds and their leader would live on top of the mountain hut so when that person passed they would then be interred or buried in the mound and their home would be burned and then they would cap it off with more soil and then the next leader would live on top of it so over time became taller and taller and you can actually see those different layers of soil if you were to kind of cut this mound in half you would see evidence of that you see the charcoal from the burnt homes you see the burials in the mounds let us climb the mountain and that feels kind of I don't know you're walking on someone's funeral pyres that it's a place that you have to respect people lived and died here just as we live in died today it's definitely a very respectful kind of foreboding place I feel that but we are going to climb the stairs to the top of it as as a leader would have done hundreds of years ago so here we go. Are there native peoples who are direct descendants of the people who lived here the descendants of the people who lived here where the Apalachee Indians that were here during the time the Spaniards arrival there are still living descendants today most of them live in Louisiana and come over for educational events and things like that so we're not climbing the the wooden stairs up. The mound which is covered with wildflowers it's actually quite pretty I know there's concern about how these ancient sites might have been impacted by what was the 3rd largest hurricane you know in the country's history but I'm thinking since the year 1000 a.d. These mounds and we're right on top now these mounds have weathered whether a lot you know I think the biggest danger to the mounds would be trees falling over because they take their root ball with them and with that of course they take part of the mound and then you have an open place where rainwater can wash away parts of the mountains here we are top of this mound we have all this growth so the leader of a community would get higher and higher and higher above the people I'm looking now on the big long where they'd all be living this was strategically placed over here to our east we have Lake Jackson I always tell people when you're looking for archaeological sites you look for your basic needs food water and shelter there are other sites similar to those throughout the southeast all the way up through the Mississippi Valley up into Ohio even when they were excavating here at least Jackson they were finding copper breastplates ornate copper breastplates we don't have copper in Florida so it was evidence of trade with those other places I understand in this mound when it was excavated there would be a family there was a dog at one point they found women they found one child I believe he was about 11 years old and yes there was a dog burial Why is it so important this again 821508 community that lived here before Desoto came through what does it mean to you I just cannot imagine the level of complexity and organization required you know we always think of prehistoric people as primitive but they were complex they lived amongst nature and they were able to take that and work with. That have build these massive structures and I think it's a testament to their abilities as a culture and as a society. This is here now. Why she was. Red Sox slugger j.d. Martinez put Boston ahead for good last night with that hit in Game 2 of the World Series against the l.a. Dodgers l.a. Will need a very big shovel to dig themselves out of the hole they now find themselves in Boston is up 2 games to none and Game 3 of the best of 7 series is tomorrow in Los Angeles Mike Pesca is here now sports analyst he hosts the daily podcast the gist at Slate dot com He joins us now hi Mike hello and how would you characterize the World Series after 2 games is Boston as strong as they look they seem to be they have been dominating every aspect of the game against the Dodgers team that's good that's really good though they may not might not have looked at maybe the Red Sox m.v.p. And it's hard to pick one at this point is their manager outscoring has made all the right choices in contrast to Dave Roberts of the Dodgers and maybe in the postseason we get on the manager's too much but man everything every move every pitcher he brought in has worked credit to them also and the Red Sox right now just to to Stickley with a 2 nothing lead and I think around 85 percent of teams with a 2 nothing lead in the World Series go on to win the series but they have looks so good and so sharp the Dodgers have to be very worried and you never know after what happened with the Cleveland Cavaliers they were down what 3 games to none and then came back and won the n.b.a. Finals last year yes but the fact that we can cite the one or the shoot of incidences where this happened you know it was the Yankees had that 3 nothing lead against the Red Sox in the playoffs famously but that was the only time it has ever happened to baseball history and I would say this if the Dodgers don't sweep don't literally win all their games in l.a. I can't see much of a chance for them to come by. Back to the cold in for them unfriendly confines of Fenway and when it in Boston can see that happen let's talk about that because I'm here just a few blocks away from Fenway Park it has been cold it's been rainy there about to go to 70 degree Los Angeles does that make a big difference for the Dodgers are you are you basking in the glow of the city like this that yeah I think it warms us up there yeah and the reason that I say it doesn't home field per se doesn't have much of an effect in baseball as opposed to other sports but the Dodgers themselves complained about it right mats in the Dodgers pitcher said that the cold was preventing him from getting a good grip on the ball and he used an adjective I hadn't heard in this context he said quote I didn't feel as good as usual when it's 7580 degrees yes the the cold Boston getting in the way of Ryan Madsen's got Minas right Mike Well we have you I want to ask you about another big story in sports right now is in basketball. Top prospect named areas Baisley is skipping college for a $1000000.00 internship at New Balance what's going on there 2 things one if he's getting a $1000000.00 It's not an internship I just wanted to put it but should companies realize that these the very elite players not everyone but the very elite players some of these guys have these high school kids have a 1000000 followers on Instagram they're they're very valuable as endorsers So the n.c.a.a. Gets in the way of that and the n.c. Double A's says if you go to college you can't take any money from an advertiser but basically said well why am I spending my time in college why would I he had he had committed or at least talked about going to Syracuse he pulled out got the $1000000.00 for just endorsing the shoe and his pro chances stay intact he has to do with the reason he has a year to kill is because of n.b.a. Rules that say you can't come right out of high school so I think if anything the. This is a good deal for the player himself and it's another indictment of the flaw of the system that requires essentially indentured servitude and the n.c.a.a. Is thinks they can continue to get something for nothing and I think those days are numbered Well I will just say as the brother of a college athlete my brother was a tennis player in college sort of on the time I was his internship worth reading I know he didn't get one but he was sort of on the pro track and then didn't go pro and then his college education actually really came in handy and now he's gone into academia I mean there is a there's an advantage of some of these people going to cause I guess maybe they decide there's absolutely no way I'm not going to make millions of dollars in the n.b.a. Right if some if the 800th best player decided to do that based on a $25000.00 internship with I don't know Case Western they still around I would say it's a bad choice but if the number one or 2 prospect in the country who is guaranteed to make millions of dollars make that makes that choice it's different and tennis is a good example because there are top tennis players who are all the time decide not to go to college in fact going to college in a couple sports tennis primary among them will probably hinder your development so you know if when your brother was a senior in high school he was good enough which is to say 18 years old and some someone who should be ranked at that age you know in the top 50 in the world he should've gone to college then but it's good that he got the college scholarship if he was a you know very good but not great or elite or possibly professional tennis player he'd still beat me like crazy even though he did not go pro Mike Pesca here now sports analyst also editor of the book upon further review the greatest what ifs in sports history thank you you're welcome and here now is a production of n.p.r.
